Winter Is Coming: A Leadership Responsibility
“Winter is coming” is more than a memorable metaphor; it is a leadership reminder.
Every organization will eventually face a season of uncertainty—economic pressure, IE technology challenges, talented employees leaving, unexpected competition, or a crisis no one anticipated. The question is not whether winter will come, but whether leaders will be prepared when it does.
Responsible leaders do not wait for the storm to arrive before taking action. They watch for changing conditions, ask hard questions, and have the courage to confront uncomfortable realities. They prepare their organizations while times are good, knowing that preparation creates options when circumstances become difficult. What does responsible leadership look like?
Stay curious -Pay attention to what is changing inside and outside the organization. Listen to employees, customers, competitors, and emerging voices.
Tell the truth - do not hide difficult realities from yourself or your people. Leaders build trust by acknowledging what they know, what they do not know, and what they are doing about it.
Build resilience - Develop people, systems, relationships, and resources before you desperately need them.
Take responsibility - When something goes wrong, resist the temptation to blame. Ask, “What is my responsibility, and what can I do next?”
Prepare others - Leadership is not about being the person with every answer. It is about developing people who can think, decide, and act when you are not in the room.
Winter will come. Responsible leaders accept that reality. They prepare their organizations not with fear, but with discipline, courage, humility, and hope. The best time to prepare for winter is while the sun is still shining.
