May I Shine Your Shoes?

When I worked at UMB Financial Corporation in Kansas City, MO, our CEO would end his presentation to employees with this statement, “May I Shine Your Shoes?”

In other words, be willing to serve others with humility, care, and attention to detail. In the workplace, this principle can transform ordinary interactions into meaningful experiences.

Each day, greet the other person with a warm smile, listen carefully to their needs, and respond with patience, even when the situation is difficult. The person may not always remember every word you say, but they will remember whether they felt respected, heard, and valued.

Choose kindness, stay professional when challenges arise, and treat every person as important. As a result, the workplace becomes more welcoming, efficient, and trustworthy.

The “May I Shine Your Shoes?” principle reminds us that true excellence comes from serving others well, one interaction at a time.

Keep In Touch.
