The Link: February 2021
Monthly News from Washington Park United Methodist Church
From Your Pastors
Greetings!
Well…if we thought that 2021 was going to be easier, or at the very least, less dramatic than 2020, we thought wrong. We’re only one month into our year and already it feels like we have experienced a year’s worth of emotion and news coverage. As I’ve been considering the past year, the New Year, and all that has gone along with it in my own life (being pregnant in a pandemic, a new baby, ordination, surgery, and the list goes on…) I am overwhelmed by two things.
The first is how incredible and supportive the community of Wash Park UMC can be. On a personal and professional level, I have been endlessly impressed by how hard our committees have worked and how much time and effort individuals have put into helping our larger community and our homeless neighbors. We’ve been able to not only continue being a worshiping community of faith but to be a blessing to the community. I am so excited to celebrate the ministry we have been able to do in spite of (and because of!) a global pandemic with you via Zoom on February 7th at 11 am. Be sure to join us as we give out awards for service and spend some time together as a church family.
The second is how uncertain the path is before us. We have made it through so much already, but we have so much of the storm left to weather and although there are indicators of the end, it is still out of sight. In these times, I often find myself struggling to make meaning, find the purpose in all of this trouble. When I don’t know what to do or where to go, I strive to rely on my faith, but it’s been almost a year and I find it's time to reevaluate. I believe it is time to take a look at faith, what I know about it, and, maybe more importantly, what I don’t know about it. I pray you join me as we continue our sermon series “Preaching to the Choir: Christianity for Beginners” where we’ll look at what we think we know about faith, and how asking the right questions may help us discover new wells of love, faith, and perspective in trying times.

I pray that 2021 is a time of light for you, light in the darkness or the light of a new day.
Love and Blessings,
           Rev. Jamielee

Finance Committee Update
Giving in Unique Ways!

This time of year, most people are thinking about taxes! Did I get my W2’s year, did I get all my investment tax statements, or how much do I have to take from my retirement accounts this year (RMD’s), etc…!

In my Financial Advisory practice we talk a lot about taxes and distribution planning. How do we get assets out of my estate, or accounts in the most tax-efficient way possible? How do I give to those I want if you choose? Does this help in my overall Planning/Tax/Estate strategy? Can I give away some of my low basis stock?
One thing we can do at WPUMC Budget and Finance is accept gifts in the way of investments and/or cash from investment or retirement accounts. We have set up a form to help make this process easy for members and WPMC to receive in-kind investments and donations into our accounts. You can find the form on our website under the giving page, click on the the link below, or you can email me (steve.moats@nm.com) or Michelle Hoskins (treasurer@washparkumc.org). Please work with your CPA or Financial Advisor to help you decide what you would like to donate and your CPA can also record the donation as a gift, as well as receive a giving statement from Michelle.

When we receive gifts into the account, we sell them within a few days as we will use them for the overall budget and planning of the church. If you have any questions or need help, please feel free to reach out to me or Michelle.

Children's Ministry
The Children’s Ministry team is hosting a Zoom call on Thursday, February 11 at 4:30. This call will be for kids ages 3 through 6th grade. We will have a craft and lesson to recognize and celebrate Valentine’s Day. We will also allow some time for chatting with their Sunday School friends. Denise Weed and Sheri Salis will host the call and we encourage families to participate. Please email Sheri at childrensministry@washparkumc.org, to let us know if you are interested in participating. Upon doing this, we will include you in the email with the Zoom link AND get you the supplies for the craft. There will be 3 ways to get your craft supplies. I can drop off 1 bag per child that has the supplies, mail the supplies to your house or the bags can be picked up at the church outside the church office.
We will finish up our Upside Down Curriculum and finish the month with the All You Need is Love curriculum. If you are interested in leading a message for Children’s Time or helping with a Sunday School lesson, please email me and we will get you involved. We are looking forward to gathering in person once again but until that time comes, know we miss you all and would love to have some check-ins with how your family is doing. Many blessings and thank you for your continued support.
