Monthly News from Washington Park United Methodist Church
From Your Pastor

Hello Katie,

From our new Associate Pastor:

My name is Daniel Viehland and I am overjoyed to be your new associate pastor!

I was born and raised in Tucson, Arizona, where I grew up attending St. Francis in the Foothills UMC. I spent much of my youth as a "religious seeker," variously identifying as an atheist, agnostic, "spiritual but not religious," "Christ follower," and, after a particularly meaningful trip to China, a Buddhist. By the time I went to college I identified as a Christian but, like many college students, my attendance at worship was lacking: I spent most mornings worshiping at the Church of the Holy Pillow. After receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Political Sciences and Journalism from the University of Montana I worked as a community organizer. I began attending worship services again. One day driving home from church I found myself overwhelmed by the Wesleyan understanding of grace, the idea that God's care for us is unmerited, unlimited, and unconditional. It was a challenging time for me, as I was still trying to figure out my answer to the question "what do I want to do when I grow up?"

After contemplating every other option I could think of, I finally gave into God's call and applied to Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, DC. During my time at Wesley I was active in the Wesley Chapel planning team, and served at both a small local church, Bruen Chapel UMC, and at the General Board of Church and Society, the United Methodist presence on Capitol Hill. When I returned to the Mountain Sky Conference I served two small, rural churches in Montana, Townsend UMC and East Helena UMC. In 2022 I was assigned to serve two churches on the Front Range. I will continue to serve one of these churches, First United Methodist Church of Platteville, as I pastor with you all.

I am one half of a clergy couple, having met my wife, Rev. Anna Viehland, during seminary. Together, we have two cats, a dog, and a 9 month old son, Desmond Wesley. I am passionate about Wesleyan theology, the outdoors (particularly skiing), Griz football, and ministry among the marginalized. I am so looking forward to meeting you, hearing your story, and learning about your passions as we continue on the long journey of making and becoming disciples of Christ.

Habitat for Humanity

Nathan and Steffany** have fretted for years about their leaking roof. But thanks to their home repair partnership with Habitat Metro Denver, they will soon be shielded from the elements.

When Nathan and Steffany bought their tri-level home in Denver eight years ago, they were first-time buyers. Their three-bedroom brick home needed a lot of work and the roof leaked. But the housing market was hot and the couple had been outbid on other homes.

They patched the flat roof, and made updates to the interior by putting in new kitchen fixtures, finishing the basement, and converting one bedroom into a hair salon for Steffany’s part-time business.

When a tree fell on their patched roof a few years later, things took a turn for the worse. Insurance wouldn’t cover the $30,000 to $60,000 cost to replace the whole roof. Even with a low interest mortgage and Nathan’s job as a commercial journeyman electrician, they couldn’t afford a loan to buy a new roof. They have two sons, ages 3.5 years and 9 months.

“When we first moved in, the ceiling in the boys’ room fell in and we’ve been patching the roof ever since,’’ shares Nathan. “The leak in their room now has water running down the wall. We had to figure out a way to get a new roof.”

Nathan began to research ways to get the roof fixed. He saw an ad for Habitat’s home repair program and filled out an application. When Habitat contacted him to move the project forward, it almost seemed surreal.

“I applied, but I didn’t get my hopes up,” shares Nathan. “Then Habitat called and said ‘We are going to do your roof.’ It was too good to be true!”

As part of the Habitat partnership agreement, the family will pay about 15% of the roofing costs. Nathan also put in sweat equity by helping recycle metal and assembling light fixtures at the Habitat ReStore. And he also took a class in estate planning.

“We’ll all sleep better with a new roof over our heads,” shares Nathan. “Habitat has been a real blessing.”

If you’d like to help transform the lives of families like Nathan and Steffany’s family of four, here are some upcoming opportunities to volunteer with Habitat. There’s even an opportunity to help with a home repair project on June 29:
