Vol. 67 No. 41 ✥ October 14, 2026

October 18, 2026 ❖ The Twenty-first Sunday after Pentecost

Lessons: Psalm 97; Philippians 4:4-7

Sermon: "Rejoice, the Lord is King!"

Charles Wesley wrote the hymn “Rejoice, the Lord is King!” in 1746, celebrating the joy we find in the celebration of the kingship of Jesus Christ over all creation. We sing this hymn together, believing that in Christ we are given hope and joy that overpowers all the darkness we face in this world and leads us to our eternal home.

This is the season after Pentecost in the Christian year. Having celebrated the “birthday of the church” through the giving of the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost, we enter the Season after Pentecost for 24 weeks, to celebrate the existence of the church and recall her mission in the world. The liturgical color for the season is green, symbolic of the church’s growth and mission.

Our First Sermon Series this Fall is “Hymns of Joy,” where for four weeks, we will explore the hymns we sing and the scriptures they invoke. We’ll find joy anew as we sing and share these important parts of our shared worship!

Anthem:

"Glorious is the Lord Almighty" - Haydn

Worship is live on our homepage and YouTube channel at 11:00 a.m.,

but we love having you with us in the sanctuary!

SECURITY & ABUSE PREVENTION TRAINING

This training is being offered twice this fall and is required for all staff, volunteers, chaperones, and committee members who work with our youth and children. Parents and others who are interested in learning about Lakeside's Security Policies and emergency equipment are invited to join us. See the flyer below for dates and times.

GODWIN LIBRARY IS GETTING A GLOW UP!

Be sure to take a peek into Godwin Library to see the beautiful furniture that has been given to make the space more functional and attractive! We are especially grateful to Carol and Andy Barker for donating the table and chairs that had previously been placed at West Haven Presbyterian Church in memory of Jim and Alice Dickens, and to West Haven Presbyterian Church for the gift of the cabinet that will now house some of Lakeside's historical items and photos.

In the near future, bins will be added to the old library shelves to provide space for Growing Together Groups and Committees to store resources. If you lead a group and need some designated shelf space, please let the church office know. We are still looking for an enclosed storage cabinet, approximately countertop height (in the range of 32 to 38 inches tall), dark wood tone preferred, to store additional photographs, newspaper clippings, and other documents from Lakeside's history. If you have a piece that you no longer need and would like to donate, please let the church office know.

YOUTH NEWS

I am so proud of the youth who spoke at Sunday's luncheon and grateful for the support of those who joined us for the program. The amazing experiences our young people have in places like Arizona are possible only because our Lakeside family supports them so generously. Thank you!

We will have a regular schedule of activities this Sunday evening, October 18. Youth, please plan to join us for the Fall Festival on October 25, as you help to host this event for our younger children. Youth, Youth & Children's Committee members, and other volunteers are asked to arrive no later than 3:00 p.m. to assist with set up and decorating.

Youth families, please take a look at the projects for Lakeside Involved on Saturday, November 7, and sign up for your family to assist with one of these. What a great opportunity for families to do meaningful work together for the sake of our community!

I look forward to seeing everyone on Sunday. Come and bring a friend!

MUSIC NOTES

The anthem for this Sunday is an arrangement by Elwood Coggin of the Gloria from Franz Joseph Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass (Mass No. 3 in D Minor), also known as Missa in Angustiis, or Mass in a Time of Anxiety. Martin Pearlman, Founding Music Director of the Boston Baroque, offers the following context in his program notes for their performance of the mass in 2013,

“Haydn called his mass Missa in Angustiis (Mass in a Time of Anxiety). In the previous year, Napoleon had defeated the Austrian armies and threatened Vienna, and then, in the summer of 1798, he had broken through the allied naval blockade and appeared ready to conquer Egypt. It was a tense and uncertain time, but in mid-September, about a week before Haydn's new mass was to be performed, word reached Vienna that the British Admiral Horatio Nelson had destroyed Napoleon's fleet in a brilliant victory at Aboukir. Exactly how or when Haydn's Missa in Angustiis became popularly known as the Lord Nelson Mass is something that no one even at that time was able to say for certain, but surely the first listeners would have associated the terrifying trumpets and timpani of the opening Kyrie and the jubilant, dramatic music that followed with the political turmoil -- and then the military victory -- that was on everyone's minds. Two years later, Haydn performed this work before the conquering hero himself during his visit to the Esterházy palace at Eisenstadt.”

The Gloria is the second part of the Ordinary of the Mass, meaning the portions of the liturgy that remain relatively constant from week to week, following immediately after the Kyrie as part of the Entrance rite. The version of the Gloria used in masses today was first found in Frankish sources dating to the 9th century. It is also known as the hymnus angelicus, since it begins with the hymn sung by the angels at the birth of Christ, “Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth.” (Luke 2:14). Additionally, it is often referred to as the Greater Doxology, to differentiate from Gloria Patri, known as the Lesser Doxology, sung each week in our worship services following the responsive Call to Worship.

While no less glorious, Glorious is the Lord Almighty is a musical and textual arrangement of the thematic material found in the Gloria Haydn composed for the Lord Nelson Mass. Coggin’s lowering of the key by one whole step from D major to C major and adaptation of the text to more closely conform with modern performance times make it a wonderfully accessible and appropriate anthem for many times and seasons of the church year, while still capturing the festive and angelic nature found in the Gloria proper.

Martin Pearlman’s full programs notes on the Lord Nelson Mass can be found by clicking the button below. Included also is a link to a performance of the work, beginning at the second movement (the Gloria).

CHILDREN'S CORNER

Building Community

Working Together

In a world of such division and unkindness, where people discriminate toward each other based on so many things, instead of loving each other and helping our neighbors when they are in need, God calls us to love God and also to love our neighbors. God calls us to care for one another, and that means we must work together to build community: A community that helps people in times of need, in times of sadness, and pain. We need to also be there for our neighbors in the happy times, during our greatest achievements and successes. Building community creates trust, it makes people feel that they belong somewhere and share a common purpose. Having a community we can depend on makes us feel that we are not alone.
