October 4, 2026 ❖ World Communion Sunday

Lessons: Acts 2:42-47; 1 Corinthians 10:16-17; 11:23-26

Sermon: "I Come With Joy"

There are so many places in the world where there is seemingly no joy at all. We are surrounded by bad news all around us. In moments of despair, we can be grateful for our faith, which reminds us that we are a people ultimately of joy, no matter what we face, because Christ has set us free. On this World Communion Sunday, our hymn this week, written by Brian Wren, reflects on our joy as we approach the Lord’s Table, “forgiven, loved, and free.”

Today is World Communion Sunday, which is observed annually on the first Sunday in October. In a time when fear and violence divide the people of God's earth, World Communion Sunday reminds us of our unity through Christ. Christians in congregations around the world are participating in communion today, and Lakeside Church joins our brothers and sisters in all nations as we gather around the table to remember Christ’s sacrifice.

Our First Sermon Series this Fall is “Hymns of Joy,” where for four weeks, we will explore the hymns we sing and the scriptures they invoke. We’ll find joy anew as we sing and share these important parts of our shared worship!

Anthem:

"Ave Verum Corpus" - Mozart

Worship is live on our homepage and YouTube channel at 11:00 a.m.,

but we love having you with us in the sanctuary!

SECURITY & ABUSE PREVENTION TRAINING

This training is being offered twice this fall and is required for all staff, volunteers, chaperones, and committee members who work with our youth and children. Parents and others who are interested in learning about Lakeside's Security Policies and emergency equipment are invited to join us. See the flyer below for dates and times.

ENDOWMENT RECOGNITION LUNCHEON

The Endowment Committee hosted an Endowment Recognition Luncheon on September 27 in Robbins Hall following the morning worship service. It was gratifying to see so many of our members and friends interested in learning more about Lakeside’s Endowment Fund and how they can support it.

We recognized and expressed our appreciation to Mary and Larry McAdams for their role in the Endowment’s creation. Shauw Chin Capps, president of the CBF Foundation, which manages Lakeside’s Endowment, spoke of the importance of an endowment in providing financial stability and expanded financial capacity for a church and discussed several of the ways in which we can support our Endowment. Those ways were also discussed in the “Case for Support” enclosure which was circulated to all members with our invitation to the luncheon.

If you are interested in learning more about the Endowment or how you can support it, contact any member of the Endowment Committee, Keith Ballentine, Dan Herring, Sam Johnson, Chuck Robbins and Norma Turnage, or any of our following members who have experience in estate or financial planning and have agreed to be available to consult: Mark Edwards, Stewart Gibson, Tyler Gupton, Leslie Paszek and Hope Reese.

OUTSIDE INTERACTION WAIVER

Our insurance company would like Lakeside to institute a policy to limit outside interactions among church staff, volunteers, and members for activities like babysitting, pet sitting, tutoring, coaching, private lessons, etc. We do not believe it is in the best interest of our church members and participants to require such limits for your interactions outside of regular church activities. Instead, we are asking members and families who may engage in such activities to sign a waiver to assume any risk and release the church from liability should any problems arise as a result of those individual relationships.

A downloadable, printable waiver form is attached for anyone who needs one, or you may sign the form at the church office.

YOUTH NEWS

October will be a busy and exciting month for our Lakeside Youth! I hope all our youth families will make plans to join us following worship on October 11 for a covered-dish lunch. Our Pilgrimage participants will share reflections and photos from our June trip to Arizona.

Then, on October 25, we will host our annual Community Fall Festival from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. The Lakeside Youth will help to host this event for our children. We'll have snacks, games, crafts, a giant bouncy house, hayride, and lots of sweet treats! Come in costume, but nothing scary or violent. Youth will be needed beginning at 3:00 that day to help with decorating and set-up.

We'll have a regular schedule of Sunday evening activities this week as we continue to explore what it means to be a good neighbor. Join us for a fun time of Bible study, dinner, and fellowship, and as always, invite a friend to join us!

MUSIC NOTES

The anthem to be sung this Sunday is Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s setting of the 13th century Eucharistic (Communion) hymn titled, “Ave Verum Corpus,” meaning, “Hail True Body.” Translated from Latin into English, the text reads:

Hail, true body, born of the Virgin Mary,

having truly suffered, sacrificed on the cross for mankind,

from whose pierced side water and blood flowed:

Be for us a foretaste [of the Heavenly banquet] in the trial of death!

O sweet Jesus, O holy Jesus, O Jesus, son of Mary,

have mercy on me. Amen.

(Translation, St. James Music Press)

Ron Jeffers writes in Translations and Annotations of Choral Repertoire, “This short Eucharistic hymn is said to have been written by either Pope Innocent III (1198-1216) or Pope Innocent IV (1243-1254). It has been used liturgically during Benediction, during the Offertory of the Mass, and as a private devotion during the Elevation of the Host (a part of the Mass introduced only in the 12th century). This hymn has been associated primarily with the votive Mass of the Most Holy Sacrament and the feast of Corpus Christi (‘Body of Christ’).”

The Mass refers to the historic pattern of worship centered around the celebration of Holy Communion common in several denominations of Western Christianity, now most often associated with the Roman Catholic Church. The bread consecrated during the communion prayer of the Mass is thereafter referred to as the Host.

Jeffers continues, “The text of ‘Ave Verum Corpus’ commemorates Christ’s redemptive Sacrifice, and especially focuses on the great symbol of Baptism: the pouring forth of water from his pierced side. Ezekiel’s Old Testament vision of Baptism (see Vidi aquam, ‘I saw water flowing from the right side of the temple’), St. John’s account of the fulfillment of this prophecy during the Crucifixion (John 19:34), the prophecy of Zacharias (‘And I will pour out upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace, and of prayers: and they shall look upon me, whom they have pierced’), and St. John’s Apocalyptic vision of the River of Life (‘a river of the water of life, flowing forth from the throne of God and of the Lamb’ - Apocalypse [Revelation] 22:1) are all recalled in this Eucharistic sequence.”

CHILDREN'S CORNER

This past Sunday, the children learned about the Golden Rule, “Treat others the way you want to be treated.” Treat others with kindness, respect, care, love, and so much more. We learned to follow that rule not just with our friends and family, but also strangers and those who are unkind to us. Treating someone who is unkind to us with care and respect can maybe teach them to respond with love and respect in the future. We learned that when people are unkind to us, we can only control our actions. How we respond in these moments is what is really important. If we match unkindness with unkindness, we miss out on an opportunity to spread love.
