Rector's Ramblings
Today is the Commemoration of St. James the Apostle. He and his brother John, the sons of Zebedee, were among the first of the twelve Jesus called to follow him as apostles. Along with Peter, they were Jesusā inner circle. They were the three Jesus took with him to witness the transfiguration.

James and John came from a wealthy family. When Jesus called them, they were fishing with their father. They left their father with his servants to follow Jesus. It was not common for those in the fishing business to have servants.
Jesus called James and John the Sons of Thunder. Perhaps this nickname was the result of the event when Jesus was rejected by a Samaritan village. James and John asked if they should call down fire from heaven to consume the village.
Tradition holds that James made a missionary journey to Spain. He preached the Gospel in Cartagena. In A.D. 40, he returned to Jerusalem. After his martyrdom, his remains were taken back to Spain, where he was buried at Compostela.
James was the first of the twelve apostles to suffer martyrdom. Jamesā martyrdom is the only martyrdom of one of the twelve recorded in the New Testament. In A.D. 42, Herod Agrippa I ordered the beheading of James. When Herod saw that it pleased the authorities in Jerusalem, he ordered Peter to be arrested. However, Peter was released from prison by an angel. The account of these events can be found in Acts 12.

THE 29th ANNUAL SERMON ON THE MOUNT SERVICE
Sunday, July 27, 2025 at 10:00 AM
Do you remember the first Sermon on the Mount service? Remember sitting on the hillside on blankets and lawn chairs as we held this service for the very first time? Our archives recorded that this outdoor service was first held twenty-nine years ago! What are your favorite memories of this service through the years?
Bring your memories - and join us for the annual Sermon on the Mount service to be held on Sunday, July 27 at 10:00 AM. After a service of Morning Prayer in the Betty Fortney chapel, the grill will be fired up for burgers and dawgs in the pavilion. Please sign up in the Narthex if you are attending, and if you can bring a side dish to share.

Notable with Bob Morrison
About age ten, every Saturday, following my Peabody piano lesson, down to the Stieff Piano store I went, there to play a Hammond Organ to my heart's content. There were two Hammonds available: the main one in the demo room, where potential buyers were treated to a welcoming environment. And there was another venue not so welcoming up on the sixth floor warehouse. There, amid packing crates, blankets and dim lighting sat a Hammond with its tone cabinet. On occasions when the lovely demo room was in use, I was directed to the sixth floor and I recall, like yesterday, the moment I fired up the Hammond and started to play, the packing crates and blankets disappeared and I was transported to moments of delight. It's the expulsive power of a new obsession.
And so, thinking that a Hammond was so great, I began to hint to my church folks that we needed a Hammond to replace the two-manual reed organ - and they agreed! On December 18, 1946, a Hammond Organ was installed in Baltimore at the North Avenue UP Church. I felt like the King of the Hill. A week before Christmas, too, so I had a chance to show off all my carols on this new gem. The war was over and Hammond had just introduced a new chorus/vibrato dial that enhanced the output considerably.
And the Stieff folks asked me to do a demo down at the store. Mr. Stieff himself instructed me. I remember him suggesting I use the cello preset (C# on the lower manual) with lots of expression to imitate the bowing of a cello. His wife, quite a musician in her own way, gave me hints on playing "Alexander's Ragtime Band" by not playing tonic/dominant pedals but rather using a scale passage.
With this new organ at my church, I planned recitals to dedicate it and to show off what this exceptional device could do. But I was soon to find out that not everyone in the North Avenue Church was happy with this new acquisition.
