WE SEEK TO UNITE ALL PEOPLE WITH GOD AND EACH OTHER IN CHRIST THROUGH WORSHIP, FELLOWSHIP, EDUCATION, AND SERVICE

Rector's Ramblings

On Wednesday, August 6, the church celebrated the Feast of the Transfiguration. Jesus went up the mountain to pray. He took Peter, James, and John with him. While he was on the mountaintop, Moses and Elijah appeared with Jesus as Jesus was transfigured. His glory was revealed to Peter, James, and John.

One of the often-overlooked meanings of the transfiguration has to do with our eternal destiny. Moses had been dead for more than twelve centuries. Elijah had been taken into heaven about eight centuries earlier. Their personal identities were secure in God’s presence.

In Luke 20:27-38, the Sadducees asked Jesus about the resurrection. Jesus said the resurrection is clear in the statement that God is the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. God is the God of the living, not of the dead.

When we pray for those whom we love, but see no longer, we can be assured that their personal identities are preserved in God’s presence.  If Moses and Elijah were at the transfiguration, those who have died in the Lord since that day are preserved for the day of resurrection, when we will be reunited with them.

📣 HELP WANTED: Eucharistic Ministers Needed!

No Experience Necessary—Just a Willing Spirit!

St. Mark’s is seeking a few good souls to help serve during our worship services as Eucharistic Ministers. This is a meaningful, once-a-month (or so) opportunity to support our church family—and yes, we can work around snowbird seasons, busy calendars, and other commitments!

Low Commitment, High Impact:

Serve just 10–15 times a year—about once a month—and we’ll accommodate your schedule.

Not a Public Speaker? No Problem!

If reading in front of the congregation isn’t your thing, but you’re willing to serve the Chalice during Communion, we’d love to pair you with a Lector who can handle the speaking. We’ll match the role to your comfort level.

Join us in this sacred, simple act of service that helps bring the holy to the people.

Notable with Bob Morrison

I was dumbfounded when I heard that the trustee chair said I was turning the church from a lifeboat to a showboat!. I thought the dedication recital for our new organ was a "plus" for the congregation, but that comment brought me down to earth. My first thought was just to forget it - advice I gave to my organist friend Jim Mayercak who heard that someone in his congregation was calling the church service "The Jim Mayercak Show."

But I changed my mind. Scripture tells us that we are to enter God's House with praise - even a "joyful noise." There's no way a trumpet or organ can play itself; no way there can be shouts of praise without a human voice. So there: that disposes of the "show boat" argument, I hope.

As the days of my delight with the new Hammond evolved, I felt that the factory setting for a string stop (preset "E" on the top manual) was too loud, so I opened up the back of the console where all the mechanism of that device was housed and studied the position of the wiring for the presets. The genius of Hammond's design was to take a single sound, a pure sine wave with flute-like smoothness, and make it available at ninety pitches and eight strengths per pitch. So I reset Swell E to 00 1333 111. The two zeroes are reserved for tones an octave lower. The "1" is the fundamental pitch which, at level 1, is the weakest sound. The 333's are all higher overtones but at "3" level not so intrusive - just enough to mimic the sound of strings. The 111 lends a tiny glint of sparkling overtones to make this "salicional" a nice string.

It was fun experimenting with these overtones and trying to make this $1250 device sound like a big pipe organ.  But as time went on, I began to question whether my initial enthusiasm was justified.
