WE SEEK TO UNITE ALL PEOPLE WITH GOD AND EACH OTHER IN CHRIST THROUGH WORSHIP, FELLOWSHIP, EDUCATION, AND SERVICE

Rector's Ramblings

As I write these Rector’s Ramblings, the news out of Texas is heartbreaking. At this point, 119 people have been confirmed to have perished in the flood waters, many of them children. Over 170 are still missing.

Already accusations are flying. Some may have merit. Others may be baseless. At this point, none of them are productive. There will be time later for an examination of what went wrong in getting adequate warning out to the camps and others in the path of the flood. Hopefully, those findings will change the future response to such weather events if possible.

What should our Christian response be now? The Christian response is, as it always is when faced with tragedy, to try to bring comfort to those who are suffering. At the end of the Book of Revelation, we are told that we serve a God who will wipe away every tear from every eye. In the meantime, we can work to wipe away some of those tears now.

This does not mean that the church should not work toward justice. However, as we work to change systems, we must not forget the individuals involved. Any action we take that is not motivated by love may contribute more to the brokenness of this world.

If you would like to help wipe away some of the tears in Texas, the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas has set up a flood relief fund here.

At the same time, we do not need to look as far as Texas to see heartbreaking stories. They are in our own neighborhoods on a smaller scale. Wherever we see heartbreak, our task is to do whatever we can to bring relief to those who are suffering.

ST. MARK’S SUMMERTIME PICNICS!

We had a splendid turnout and a beautiful day for our first outdoor service last Sunday. The weather was perfect, with sunshine and blue skies. After a service of Morning Prayer in the chapel, with wonderful music and singing, the grill was fired up, and hot dogs, hamburgers and all sorts of side dishes were served in the breezy pavilion. Lots of St. Mark’s ā€œspecialtiesā€ were on hand, like baked beans, multiple delicious salads, and homemade hummus, and yummy desserts.

It’s a great time to thank the building and grounds folks for the excellent job of trimming much of the overgrown trees around the pavilion and chapel areas, and to the ā€œgarden warriorsā€ who have been working in the chapel gardens all spring. The Columbarium flowers and gardens have been spruced up and a new rose bush was planted at the front entrance.

The next picnic will be the SERMON ON THE MOUNT - SUNDAY, JULY 27, so please mark your calendars and plan to attend this annual service in the lovely Betty Fortney Sanctuary in the Woods. Look for the sign up sheet in the Narthex for side dishes and attendance.

Building Update & Donation Request

Again, congratulations and thank you to everyone involved with, and all who attended, our 70th year young celebration. This highlights the fact that our beautiful church building is 60 years plus old. Mature buildings require maintenance.

This spring we started to address a long overdue floor issue in what is now the Rector’s office, coatroom, and administration office. Several years ago, the concrete added around the original concrete pad that was part of the original church entrance sunk and cracked away from the original pad. The added concrete needs to be lifted, before a skim coat can be applied to level the floor. After the skim coat, new flooring will be installed. This project is scheduled to start the week of June 22nd. If you are planning a wedding at St. Mark’s, please wait until after mid-July.

The driveway and parking lot was refinished and lined in 2020. At that time an electric line was also added to the Betty Fortney Chapel. In 2022 we had the parking lot cracks filled. Later this summer the driveway and parking lot will be sealed and lined.

The Vestry, at their June meeting, approved two motions to move forward with these capital projects at a total cost not to exceed $24,000. At the end of May, St. Mark’s had $28,000 in Capital Reserves. By September the parking lot will look new and you will be able to sit in the Rector's office and not roll to the wall. And, the Capital reserve will be down to $4,000.

All that is to say, we could use donations to the St. Mark’s Capital Reserve.

Rest assured, between the Vestry, Finance Committee, and Buildings & Grounds team, we remain fully committed to using your generous contributions responsibly and wisely.

Thank you,

God’s Grace

Charlie Kiesling

Notable with Bob Morrison

After my first experience with an organ at age 9, I left the expression pedal closed. It's recommended to leave it open so the temperature will be stabilized in the pipe chamber. With large organs, the shutters automatically open when the organ is not in use but with the mechanical pedal on the organ that I had played the shutters stayed closed, which caused Miss Whelan, the organist, to report to the church council that I had broken the organ.

Well, thankfully, nothing came of that accusation but things were about to change in my organ quest. When I was 10, the Baltimore Sunday Sun newspaper in 1935 had an article, "Pipeless Organ Makes Debut." I perked up and the next Saturday, after my piano lesson at Peabody, I walked to 315 N Howard Street in downtown Baltimore to the Steiff Piano Company which had the franchise for the Hammond Organ. I was greeted with open arms and an invitation to come anytime and play as long as I wanted - a far cry from Miss Whelan's discouragement.

Laurens Hammond was quite an inventor who, at his death, held 91 patents for everything from an automatic bridge table card shuffler to motion picture devices, to automobile machinery, to electric clocks and their synchronous motors -quite significant because this device would run at a set speed without deviation.

He founded the Hammond Clock Company in 1928 and while experimenting with magnets, he noted that an interruption of the magnetic field would make a soft sound. He enlisted the aid of his assistant treasurer W. L. Lahey who was organist at St. Christopher Episcopal Church in Chicago which led to the tonewheel generator. With these tonewheels operating at a fixed speed, thanks to the synchronous motors, a series of these, each with its own pitch would form the basis of an electric organ and - voila - in 1934 Hammond filed a patent for the Hammond Organ!

I hastened to tell Miss Whelan that she would do well to learn to play a Hammond Organ since the days of the pipe organ were numbered. That was my final visit to her organ console.
