WE SEEK TO UNITE ALL PEOPLE WITH GOD AND EACH OTHER IN CHRIST THROUGH WORSHIP, FELLOWSHIP, EDUCATION, AND SERVICE

Rector's Ramblings

On Sunday we will enter into Holy Week.  Our culture tends to skip past this week and go straight on to Easter. We like what is joyful.  We like what appears to be powerful.  We tend to turn a blind eye to self-sacrifice and suffering.  Without Holy Week, the resurrection loses its power.  It is because of his willingness to suffering in obedience to the plan of God that Jesus was resurrected and ascended into heaven.

This is a message that our culture desperately needs to hear.  God’s power is often demonstrated through those things that the rest of the world finds weak.  The suffering of Jesus was not some sort of unfortunate event on the way to the resurrection.  His rejection of the powers of this world and their rejection of him in turn was a demonstration of God’s power over the powers of this world.

Please join us for our Holy Week liturgies beginning with Palm Sunday at 9:00 a.m.  We will observe Maundy Thursday and 7:00 p.m. and Good Friday at Noon and 7:00 p.m.

A thank you from Sunday School:

I’d like to start by giving a huge thank you to Livvy Mull! She took the time to listen to our students in Sunday School explain their vision for the 70th anniversary banner and make that vision come to fruition. They wanted a large cross, they wanted flowers to show growth and how our church has bloomed over the many years, and they wanted the entire congregation to have a hand in it too. Livvy is an amazing artist and seamstress who made the banner for us, prepped the supplies for the children to cut out and then put it all together. We are so grateful for the time and energy she spent on this project with us, as we would not have a banner without her!

Thank you also to Linda Deuble for her art skills in helping the children cut the pieces for our banner and assisting with getting the congregation to make their mark on the banner as well. It was a team effort that bloomed into something beautiful!

Thank you to Sally Little for working with our children each week before church to learn a song to sing for this special service!

Finally, thank you to the kids and their parents who came early each week to practice singing and used their creativity and crafting skills to create a beautiful banner!

Thank you!

Notable with Bob Morrison

When I arrived at St. Mark's in 1997 at the invitation of Father Sloan, the organ was pretty much the way Craig Jaynes had designed it with the addition of the antiphonal pipes by Robert Wervey in the mid-80s. The console had two manuals and pedal and the pipes were fully enclosed with shutters at the front and on the side nearest the choir loft.

But as time went on, I found the main pedal stop too loud for soft music and not loud enough for loud music, and there were no really soft sounds to be had, so I began to search out ways to remedy this situation, and my first thought was of a premiere organ builder in our own backyard: Kegg Pipe Organ Builders of Hartville OH. I invited Charlie Kegg to give a presentation at church which he did on December 1, 1999 - a day that will live in my memory.

In the afternoon my wife Kathleen had a doctor's appointment and while in his office she had a stroke, and was hospitalized. That meant I couldn't attend Kegg's presentation at St. Mark's but, fortunately, Bill Rand recorded the whole thing and I copied it out and distributed it to various congregants. Kegg spoke eloquently about the importance of music in the Episcopal service and outlined some thoughts about possible improvements to the existing organ.

With the layout of St. Mark's sanctuary, it would take a major renovation to add more pipes for a larger organ, and so the project was put on hold until a conversation with John Werren, long time St. Mark's member, who had a Florida home. He told me that the church he attended down south had an organ made by Cornel Zimmer of Denver, NC, and suggested I call them for a quote, which I did. Within a day or two, their representative visited St Mark's with a proposal that would give us a more complete instrument without altering any of the chancel furnishings. But how would this be possible given the layout of our sanctuary? I have heard it said that the preacher can spout all manner of heresy and no one will say a word, but if a chancel chair is relocated, complaints will abound. So, what to do?
