Notable with Bob Morrison
April 12, 2012, was a banner day at St. Mark's—the appearance of Maestro Hector Olivera performing at our refurbished organ and his electronic Atelier.
Pam McCarthy had handled ticket sales for the event and as the hour for his appearance approached, I went to our console, which was positioned right at chancel center, and played the Westminster Strike on the chimes, and then I turned to the congregation and said, "And now, Maestro Olivera!" and Hector took his place and launched into Meyerbeer's March from "Le Prophete."
From there, we were treated to an assortment of both classical and popular favorites culminating in a duet with himself which he had pre-recorded on his Atelier and then played in person on our organ.
We had a festive reception afterwards in the Sloan Family Room, and then Hector said to me, "I want to show you some things on the organ tomorrow." Wow - what an invitation!
At the appointed time, there I was on the organ bench with this genius showing me a new device that would enlarge our tonal voices by a factor of several hundred - a Rodgers MX-200.
