The Lion's Pause

WE SEEK TO UNITE ALL PEOPLE WITH GOD AND EACH OTHER IN CHRIST THROUGH WORSHIP, FELLOWSHIP, EDUCATION, AND SERVICE

Rector's Ramblings

Generosity is a journey, it’s a practice that we learn and nurture within our hearts. It just isn’t in our nature to give away what we have worked hard to acquire or to donate our precious time without compensation. It takes something as radical as love to inspire us to share our time, talent, and treasure with others. This is a journey we make together, a walk in love.

As we have lived with the Gospel of St. Mark this year, we have been brought into a world turned radically upside down. The laws and customs that have been in place for centuries were challenged, power and dominion have been questioned, and a culture hemmed in from all sides of oppression and subjection desperately seeks a way forward.

As it turns out, it is not clever politics or force that cause the change in society, but the simplest concept of love. Jesus causes a revolution of thought and heart by daring to reach out to the outcast and teach others to do the same. He walks in love with the marginalized, with the poor, with the sick, and brings us along with him on this journey.

The most miraculous gift of love is that it was there within us all along, all we had to do was find it, tap into it, and begin growing it. And look what happened? We learned to share, to give, to volunteer, to accompany others, to feed, to pray, to visit, to strive for change. I invite you to share your stories of inspiration and connection with our shared ministry in this place and with each other. I Invite you to walk in love.

Photos Wanted!

I am looking for pictures from 1970 and forward to add to the history books of St. Mark's. These pictures could be of group confirmations, acolyte recognitions, any social events, Sunday School and youth activities, clean-up days, etc. If you would like to donate pictures, please put them in my church mailbox, see me or leave them in the church office in an envelope with my name on it. Please mark the event and year on the back. If you have some pictures and would like to keep them, copies are also welcome. There is a box of pictures at the church, but they have no dates on them, which makes it hard to match up events with years. All pictures will be GREATLY APPRECIATED. Thank you. Kathy Sloan

It’s mid-October and time to think about St. Mark’s charitable donations to Thanksgiving Baskets Downtown and Community Christmas.

Our sister church, St. Paul’s, heads the Thanksgiving baskets. About 900 families apply and should receive two vouchers, one for a small turkey and another for fresh vegetables. Last year was tight and the veggie voucher was for only $17.00.

Community Christmas, ( in it’s 65th year) has been supported by St. Marks for most of those years. We plan to adopt two families of four persons. Their needs most likely will include new clothing, food, personal hygiene and cleaning items, and toys. It is our custom to have parishioners volunteer to shop within our budget for the requested items. Other parishioners volunteer to wrap the gifts.(Dec. 8) as all gifts must be returned to Community Christmas on Dec. 10.

For these two projects I project a need of $2500 from St. Mark’s outreach fund. Last year we had extra money which we sent so that vouchers could be given to those families and individuals not adopted. No family is adopted every year. If you would like to donate to these projects, please write a check to St. Mark's and put outreach in the memo line. -Sue Little

Notable with Bob Morrison

In 1975, when my wife Kathleen and I took our son to Annapolis, there was a sign "Welcome, Class of 1979." That seemed like an eternity at first glance, but time has a way of rolling around. As it turned out, 1979 was the last class of all men. And Scott elected to be a Navy airman with training in Pensacola, Kingsville TX, LeMoore CA, and Cecil Field, Jacksonville with deployments overseas in one of which he chased a Libyan jet out of disputed air space.

In his Navy flying days, he performed 750 carrier landings (hard to imagine!). Then he was appointed Executive Officer at Cecil Field for the last two years of his obligatory twenty-year service. He was offered a chance to stay in the Navy but it would be a desk job and Scott wanted to fly.

So, upon retiring, he was hired by United Airlines, flying the Boeing 727, and then was selected as an instructor for United on the Airbus A320 in Denver. Kathleen and I went to Colorado for a visit and he introduced us to the full motion simulator. This was an awesome experience. One feels just like being on an actual flight, and I tried my hand at a simulation from Denver to Jacksonville. It's most fortunate that this was not a genuine flight.
