Rector's Ramblings
On Sunday, June 8, we will celebrate the Feast of Pentecost. This is the third great feast of the Christian year. It is the day that we celebrate the Holy Spirit coming upon the church.
There is an important characteristic of the American Book of Common Prayer that might be helpful to consider as we think about Pentecost. It was included in the 1789 Book of Common Prayer and has been included in every subsequent revision. That characteristic is the inclusion of an Epiclesis in the Eucharistic Prayer. The Epiclesis is the invocation of the Holy Spirit upon the bread and wine. In Eucharistic Prayer A, the Epiclesis is the section, “Sanctify them [the bread and wine] by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him.”
Although the first Book of Common Prayer of the Church of England, 1549, included an Epiclesis, subsequent revisions, including the 1662 revision, did not. The 1662 revision remains the official Book of Common Prayer for the Church of England, though many Alternative Service Books have been authorized for use over the centuries. Many of the Roman Catholic Eucharistic Prayers prior to the revisions following Vatican II also lack an Epiclesis. Many Lutheran Eucharistic Prayers also omit an Epiclesis.
If you have read this far, you might be asking, “What does it matter?” First, please understand I will not say the Eucharistic Prayers of Roman Catholics or Lutherans are invalid. However, in the Western churches, the Holy Spirit is often the neglected person of the Trinity. This is reflected in their traditional omission of an Epiclesis. The Eastern Orthodox Churches have always included an Epiclesis in their Eucharistic Prayers and have also focused more attention on the work of the Holy Spirit in their theological works.
Our liturgies both reflect and shape our beliefs. The Episcopal Church in the United States has always included an Epiclesis in our Eucharistic Prayers. We would do well to let that fact shape our beliefs about the role of the Holy Spirit in our Christian living.

Seeking Garden Warriors
June 7 - 9:00-11:00 AM
Third and final outdoor chapel garden clean up date: June 7 - 9:00-11:00 AM
Outstanding turnout for the garden clean up day last Saturday, May 31! Through much laughter (and hard work), we were able to thin out a great deal of the day lilies that had overrun the garden. It was a lot of digging and hauling the trash to recycle in the ravine in the woods, but our mighty gardeners were up to the task. A splendid job was done realigning a rock border and lifting up many of the large rocks that had become embedded in the garden. Mulch has also been placed in the small gardens within the chapel.
Next Saturday, June 7 is the final day for this clean up. Some additional thinning of day lilies is needed, and additional mulching will be put down. Also, the two older bench seats (seats only) need to be sanded and re-stained, if possible, or in the near future. We are still seeking perennial donations, so if you have any in your garden that can be split and transplanted in the chapel garden, please bring them, or drop them off at the outdoor altar and we will transplant them. Examples are coneflowers, coral belles, astilbe, autumn sedum, Russian sage, yarrow, bee balm, milkweed, columbine, cranesbill, or any others you may have. Two of the birdhouses also need to be repaired and rehung.
So if you can spare some time, there is a sign up sheet posted in the Narthex. Many thanks in advance!

Notable with Bob Morrison
My mother grew up in the lap of luxury in a Baltimore mansion with servants, horses - and eight brothers and sisters. In looking at a family portrait, I see my mother with an impish grin on her face, which leads me to think that she was the free spirit of this outfit.
It all came crashing down at the dinner table in 1922 when Papa Meginniss dropped dead. This eminent gentleman had been a commission merchant doing business in the Baltimore harbor. My mother frequently said that, at that moment, a little man jumped on her back and never left.
Two weeks later, she married William Edward Morrison, and I came along in 1925. My father built a house just over the city line in Baltimore County, and my first learning was at Alice M. Crater's Country School, where I encountered two things that affected all my life: phonics and music. I remember a book about the alphabet with a story about each letter, e.g., "The forgetful letter B." This all bore fruit when I attended Westminster Choir College where founder John Finley Williamson (Canton OH native) schooled us in the vowels and consonants.
My first piano teacher, for one year when I was 7, Mary Catherine Walker, became executive secretary at the Peabody Conservatory in downtown Baltimore where I was the pupil of Mabel Hammond Thomas, and later of Virgil Keel Fox and Richard Vernon Ross (from Xenia OH!)
When it came time to graduate from the Peabody, Miss Walker (whom I saw daily in the office) said something that flabbergasted me.
