The Lion's Pause

WE SEEK TO UNITE ALL PEOPLE WITH GOD AND EACH OTHER IN CHRIST THROUGH WORSHIP, FELLOWSHIP, EDUCATION, AND SERVICE

A Note from Sr. Warden, Leslie Redmon:

January! That month of wintry weather (and our famous Ohio gray skies) calls some out to enjoy the snowy slopes, while others stay tucked warmly inside around a fire. Winter seems to be particularly exciting for children and dogs, and it is great entertainment to see them frolicking freely in the freshly fallen flakes, as only children and dogs can do! We should all try to join them in falling back into a “snow angel” or two before the season ends.

February is just around the corner. Ash Wednesday falls early in the calendar this year, on February 14 - on Valentine’s Day! And the Lenten season will begin.

But before it does, let’s remember to enjoy this wintry month of January, and all the joy that awaits out there, in that brisk, snowy air.

’Tis Winter Now

  by Samuel Longfellow

’Tis winter now; the fallen snow

Has left the heav’ns all coldly clear;

Through leafless boughs the sharp winds blow,

And all the earth lies dead and drear.

And yet God’s love is not withdrawn;

His life within the keen air breathes;

His beauty paints the crimson dawn,

And clothes the boughs with glittering wreaths.

And though abroad the sharp winds blow,

And skies are chill, and frosts are keen,

Home closer draws her circle now,

And warmer glows her light within.

O God! Who giv’st the winter’s cold

As well as summer’s joyous rays,

Us warmly in Thy love enfold,

And keep us through life’s wintry days.

This poem is beautifully sung by the Hal Leonard and Shawnee Press Church Choral, on YouTube, here.

The new panel is installed and has been inspected by the necessary government departments.

Donations are still being accepted- any amounts over the $10,000 will be earmarked for future capital improvements.

Please note Fire Panel on any contributions.

Book Club

What a great book review we had reading Bishop Michael Curry’s book, Love is the Way; Holding on to Hope in Troubling Times. It was interesting to hear that the audio version of this book was actually read by the Bishop, so you got an added bonus of hearing his voice as well. The message of love resounded throughout the book, through stories of the Bishop’s childhood and family memories. But further reading expanded into current day and dealing with everyday problems, both social and personal, and how to cope in today’s world. We all gained deeper spiritual meaning from this book; comments included plans to share the book with others, placing more focus on listening to others, and adding more spiritual time as a daily practice. Thank you MaryAnn Kiesling for leading the discussion and providing the yummy treats!

Next month’s meeting will be February 12 at 3:00 pm in the Family Room. We will be reviewing Lady Clementine by Marie Benedict, an historical novel about the wife of Winston Churchill.

We miss our traveling book club readers and look forward to your return to join us in future meetings. All are welcome, so please join us, even if you didn’t finish reading the book!

The Diocese has continued to offer easy online giving. To use this, please select "St. Mark's Canton" from the dropdown, and choose either a one-time or recurring gift. We thank you for your continued support.

NOTABLE - Bob Morrison

I suppose I shouldn't complain about the boombox I bought to amplify Ray's keyboard for outdoor services. It worked well for quite a time and even helped Ron Hill's synthesizer to be better heard. After an outdoor failure, though, I became suspicious of its continued performance, climaxed by the renovation of the Betty Fortney Sanctuary in the Woods. It was a brisk Autumn day. I set up the keyboard and plugged in the boombox, played a chord, and - poof! Cut out. I tried again and again. Charlie Kiesling and Joe Hoot came over to lend a hand, but nothing worked, so I had to rely on the little enclosed speakers in the keyboard itself which, out of doors, doesn't make much of an impact.

What to do? There's an electronic wizard who does all the sound work at E. J. Thomas Hall in Akron, Greg Vinci, dba "Convincing Sound." Greg has been a great help to St. Mark's with our PA system, so I told him about the boombox and his first reaction was "B A N O." He examined it and pronounced it kaput.

That's "buy a new one." But I wasn't about to do that - and then Greg said it would now be possible to wire up the little keyboard to the new PA system which was operable out of doors since an electric outlet was now available - and indeed that's what we're going to try next time.

Meanwhile, I thought it was about time to do again Natalie Sleeth's "Feed My Lambs" with a two-flute obbligato that Bruce Schutrum will play on Ron Hill's synthesizer - likely on January 21. We won't have the boombox of course, but Bruce will turn up the volume full to be heard in this sweet anthem recounting Jesus's words on the seashore after His Resurrection.
