Paideia at Tulsa Classical Academy

Dear Tulsa Classical Academy Families,

It is a joy to serve this community and all of the wonderful people who are a part of it. Last weekend, Mr. Hodge, who has become a good friend since his arrival, and his wife invited us to a contra dance. Contra dancing originated in the 17th century from British and French folk dances, essentially they were a form of square dancing for the Brits. American Colonists combined the dances with other cultural dances from the Scots and Irish. We brought our whole family to a barn in Broken Arrow and danced the night away. It was a great experience for our whole family. Contra dancing reminded me of the importance of teaching dancing in the PE curriculum. There are traditional forms of dancing that promote order, joy, and modesty. Mr. Hodge was the caller and his wife played the violin. I got to dance with my wife and watch my children learn a new dance and enjoy dancing with their friends.

I am excited to announce that Mr. Daniel Hodges will join our team as the full-time Athletic Director next school year. Mr. Hodges has given so much of his time and energy to build our athletic program. I am grateful for all that he has done over the last three years to build our program.

Last Tuesday, we held a job fair. We had a number of good candidates come to the fair. The quality of candidates continues to improve. At this point, it has become clear even outside of the building that the school will maintain our unwavering commitment to a rigorous education for all children. I frequently hear this from candidates. I heard it again last night. As the school leader it is humbling when others speak of their desire to work here based on our good reputation.

On Tuesday of last week we had our first meeting regarding the Senior trip to Athens and Rome. If you have questions regarding the trip please reach out to Mr. Meadows or myself. In order to get the initial price for the trip it will be important to sign up by June 1st.

Thursday’s art show was fantastic. It was a delight to spend time with so many families. Ms. Pope and Mrs. Wilhite gave so much of their time and energy to make the art show happen. Their work with students in the classroom and their commitment to the school are a blessing. My two favorite pieces were Mr. Luke Amaro’s drawing of Euclid and Ms. Karina Brinegar’s drawing of Tolkien. It was a great night of music and art and it was joy to share it with so many of you.

We recently met with fifth grade parents to discuss our plan for portables. There was a great deal of discussion about who would occupy the portables. Realistically, in order for us to gain necessary space in the building, it had to be a contained class. It made sense that we would put the oldest, most mature grade level in the portables. It came down to fifth and sixth grade. Sixth grade only has three sections and the portables are four classrooms. Fifth grade was the next grade that was contained and had four sections. They also happen to be a wonderful group who has handled adversity with humility and perseverance. I am grateful for a good conversation and we look forward to moving into the portables.

It is a joy to participate in the making of young American minds. We remain ever vigilant in preparing your children for the rigors of adulthood, family, and patriotism. Thank you for your support and continued encouragement.

TCA STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

Earlier this year, the TCA House System elected its first Student Government and House leadership teams. Since then, many of our students have begun to shine as natural leaders, and have already brought great improvement to our school culture.

This week, we would like to especially recognize Clayt Johnson, the Praetor (leader) of House Vulpes.

Clayt has taken command of his House and rallied his fellow Vulpes members. He has already begun a number of initiatives to bolster unity for his House, especially in bringing our Middle School students on board with the mission. We would like to thank him and notice him for his effort!

TCA SUMMER CAMPS

LionHeart Merry Merits

Congratulations to 34 of our TCA LionHearts who participated in Cotillion. Over the course of five classes, students built skills in dance, manners, and formal dining etiquette. The program culminated in a formal dinner at The Tulsa Club Hotel on March 29, where they confidently demonstrated their dance abilities and practiced proper etiquette during a five course meal.
