My name is Karin Monzón Krimmer, and I immigrated to the U.S. with my two children from Guatemala in December of 2002 in hopes of securing a better future for my family. Recently, I had the opportunity to become an American citizen and wanted to give back to those walking the same path as myself. Therefore, when I heard about the opening of the Executive Director position at the Literacy Council from my good friend Ellen Marks Hossman, I became very excited to apply. I couldn’t believe when I began working for the Literacy Council of Green County as the Executive Director this past June, with the support and guidance of my mentor Ellen, our tutors and the board of directors.

Welcome Patricia and Jaci to Our Team
Patricia Wilson is our new Vaccine Community Outreach Southeast Regional Specialist. Patricia joins WHL from many years working with health systems and organizations as a Community Health Worker.
Patricia says, "The reason this work is so important is because there are several factors that create challenges to vaccination such as education, income, gaps in health access, transportation, poor neighborhoods, mistrust and misinformation around COVID vaccines. I would like to help individuals overcome these challenges. You only have one you so you must take good care of your health. Too many have died from this deadly virus so I must do everything I can to slow down its spread and possibly save lives."
Jaci Shuit is our new Vaccine Community Outreach Northeast Regional Specialist. Jaci joins Wisconsin Health Literacy from pediatric research medicine and infectious disease.
Jaci says, “Health literacy affects every single patient using the healthcare system. Whether you have a college education or you haven’t graduated from high school doesn’t matter when you’re injured, in pain, sleep deprived, scared, or sick and you need to make decisions about your or a loved one’s care. Therefore, clear, understandable information is a safety and ethical issue for health systems and patients alike.”

Kindergarten readiness and conversational turns: Study results point to a boost from LENA Start
A study out of South Carolina has found a correlation between increased conversational turns and higher scores on the state’s Kindergarten Readiness Assessment (KRA). Furthermore, the study found that higher KRA scores were linked to participation in the LENA Start program, designed for the parents of infants, toddlers, and preschoolers.
Around the world, researchers have used LENA technology to draw connections between conversational turns and brain growth, social-emotional development, middle school IQ scores, and more. This is also a story of community partnerships done right.
When: March 10, 2022, 1 p.m. ET
Presenter: Dr. Jody Dill, the study's author, will present these findings, along with her graduate advisor, Dr. Mary Ann Solesbee. They'll be joined by Dr. Dan Wuori, Senior Director of Early Learning at the Hunt Institute, and Lisa Blanton, Coordinator of Early Childhood/Elementary Curriculum in Cherokee County, S.C.
