Lititz Run Watershed Bike Tour

Ride, Learn, Give Back

By Mark Branle

Love biking and learning about the environment? On June 8th, combine the two while supporting your local watershed alliance. As part of Lancaster Conservancy’s annual Water Week program, LandStudies will lead a 13-mile guided group ride exploring some of the restoration work that has been done within the Lititz Run Watershed. They’ll stop at different project sites along the way, learning how they are improving water quality, restoring ecological functions, and providing many other economic and environmental benefits to the community.

Proceeds will benefit the Lititz Run Watershed Alliance. This ride is best suited for intermediate to experienced road riders and will primarily be along paved roads. LandStudies will split into small groups to suit different paces. They estimate the ride will take +/-2 hours.

Our First Hike was a Hit

Join us for our next Urban Hike

By Rebecca Branle

An urban hike through town sounds a little curious to some. When we announced our initiative, we heard questions like, "Isn't it just a walk?" and "Lititz isn't urban." We heard you, but after our first outing, we're also pretty positive we're onto something special.

Scheduled for the second Thursday of every month, our urban hikes differ from traditional walks because we aim to find the little-known trails and pathways tucked into our town, all while beginning in an urban environment of sidewalks, streets, and dense clusters of buildings.

On April's hike, we started off on sidewalks, made our way down paved paths, and then found ourselves on a dirt trail winding along a stream near New Street Park. As we went, we picked up litter, returning to our starting point with a compostable bag that overflowed with waste.

For May's walk, scheduled for May 8th at 8 am and starting at Earth to Lititz, our plan is to head in another direction, find more hidden treasures, and learn more about our sweet town. Our walks will always aim to be between 45 and 55 minutes and move at a steady but relaxed pace. All are welcome, including well-behaved four-legged friends. We encourage hikers to bring water and wear shoes that work well on paved and dirt surfaces. We provide the compostable garbage bags for litter pick-up.

Earth to Lititz is One! One Year of Eco-Friendly Fun

A heartfelt thanks to everyone who supported us in our first year! We've learned, grown, and gained so many amazing new friends. As we enter our second year, we're setting our sights on community-building activities. Stay tuned for announcements about group hikes at local trails and speakers from local environmental and preservation organizations.

Lititz, Let's Ride!

Join us for Group Shop Rides

By Josh Kreiser

In last month’s newsletter, I asked what kind of off-road rides folks would be interested in. The response was overwhelming - both gravel and mountain rides. So here's the deal: the ride will meet every Sunday at 8 am in the Pumping Station parking lot. We’ll alternate each week between gravel and mountain rides. All of the gravel routes are preplanned and listed here.

The ride style and route will be posted leading up to the ride on Bikeworks’ Instagram. The rides will be weather and condition-dependent, so keep an eye on the Instagram page for updates. We will keep a chill pace, around 15 mph for the gravel rides and no drop. BYOS (Bring your own support), don’t be that person who’s always asking for a multi-tool! Possibility for post-ride refreshments back at the shop, but no promises. The first ride will be on April 27th on the “A” route!

In other news, I’ve heard some rumblings about SAMBA having an event at Camp Mack that just happens to coincide with our first mountain ride. Nothing has been announced yet, but get ready to dust off your trail-building shoes.

I’ve been talking with riders in the shop over the last few weeks, and the response has already blown me away. Thanks to everyone who filled out the form and helped with creating gravel routes. Now, if you’re ever unsure if your bike is well-suited for a ride, don’t hesitate to swing by Lititz Bikeworks the week before the ride. We offer free safety checks and are more than happy to advise about anything you might be unsure of.

See you on the bike!
