Hello you fabulous readers! Welcome to year FOURTEEN of the Local Buzz. It's been a delight to write, and a wonderful way to get to know so many of you. So... let's get this party started!
Whatever did we do before the internet? (And yes, I can remember life without it!) The Facebook (FB) page, Who would you refer in Sussex County DELAWARE
? with its 14,000 members, has been very helpful. A virtual treasure trove of information, it's a great place to find the best crab cake, dentist, mechanic, vet, tattoo artist, or whatever. Janet S just gave a shout out to Amazon Steel of Milford, who built this rockin' dog area under her stairs
. The most hilarious post recently, was by Ian B, who asked where to find an affordable, robust brand of coffee. 178 comments later, the Buzz now knows about "Wake the F*ck Up Coffee" sold by Peppers
of Lewes (along with the world's largest collection of hot sauces!)
The Buzz has been trying to verify that Aldi
is indeed, coming to the former Rehoboth KMart space. (An email to Aldi corporate got a response that neither confirmed nor denied.) A query on "Who Would You Refer
..." led to "What's Going There in Delaware?"
(a FB group led by Delaware Online/News Journal). While no post there confirmed the Aldi rumor, the Buzz discovered that the owners of EasySpeak Spirits
, have purchased the Penney Square building
in downtown Milford. This sparked an impromptu road trip to check out the Penney bldg which is HUGE, btw, and a drive by EasySpeak Spirits, which has a fun menu (Beer Cheese Soup / Apple, Gouda and Bacon Pizza) and looks totally inviting. EasySpeak is offering a Virtual Cocktail class
on Jan 27.
Continuing down the social media rabbit hole led to comments on EasySpeak's FB page
about the Penney building being haunted. If that is the case, Lifecycle
said they would add it to their Haunted Milford Bicycle Tour.
will close the doors
on the downtown Rehoboth location January 31, and reopen at the former TGIFriday's location (in the Safeway shopping center), sometime in March.
Speaking of partnerships, check out the Virtual Author Events by the Lewes Public Library and Browseabout Books.
January events include “Champ and Major: First Dogs
”; author Joy McCullough in conversation with the Delaware Humane Association; “In Case You Get Hit By a Bus
”; "The Black Market
”; and “Salt Wars
” authors as well.
has opened a second location in Milton, in the former Gilligan's space. The Milton Beaches will offer many of the same dishes that they do in Lewes including steamed crabs, snow crab, fried oysters and crab cake sandwiches. At this time there won’t be a market in Milton, but the Milton location will begin offering breakfast starting Jan 10.
The Milton Theatre
is reopening January 22. The Freeman Stage is now the Freeman Arts Pavilion
, with plans to build a $27 million dollar venue, with a 4000 seating capacity (1100 under roof). The new venue will provide state-of-the-art sound, lighting and video, an expanded concession and dining area, an artists' dressing room, and production space.
Osher Lifelong Learning Institute
opens online registration January 13 with over 200 courses available! You can study everything from Laurel and Hardy, to Opera’s Greatest Hits, to Ikebana, to Travel Writing, and more. All classes online.
The Cape Henlopen Senior Center
in Rehoboth Beach welcomes local seniors to participate in its virtual programs and events. You do not have to be a member to join in. Beginner line dancing; Sit and Get Fit; Bingo; Gentle Yoga; Tai Chi and more.
The empty store next to Cafe-A-Go-Go (in downtown Rehoboth) now has a sign in the window that says Chocolate Wave. Will keep you posted as I learn more.
Milford Movies 9
is now open. There's laser projectors on every screen AND, state-of-the-art seats. These are FULL recliners with independent headrest adjustments, USB ports to charge your phone, AND THEY. ARE. HEATED. YOWZA!
is coming to Tanger Seaside. Texas Roadhouse
is coming to Millsboro. January is Grilled Cheese month at SoDel restaurants
(Brie still my heart). Think Lobster Grilled Cheese (Bluecoast Bethany); Grilled Cheese French Dip with roast beef (Crust & Craft); more here.
Teresa R wrote to tell me about the Teach a Person to Fish Society.
The group plans to plans to create a network of community and private gardens to help serve charitable partners in Sussex County.
Sussex County Council approved a project that will bring an RV resort
to the site of the former Georgetown Raceway. The 73-acre parcel will feature more than 300 RV camper sites, 46 cabins, a pool and multiple sports fields.
A fitness center is likely coming
to Rehoboth Beach near Tanger Seaside on Holland Glade Road. The developer is also proposing a 77-bedroom hotel on the same property. The fitness center will be a two-story, 18,000-square-foot building.
A portion of my real estate commissions go to support Best Friends in Utah, which is the nation's largest no-kill sanctuary for animals.
