I’m back in the States! What a great trip over to the UK and Ireland. I got to see the tech neighborhoods of Shoreditch, London and Silicon Docks, Dublin, and meet with some entrepreneurs and ecosystem organizers in Belfast to learn about what’s cooking in the North. Of course, I also played tourist.
One of the startup ecosystem themes I witnessed in Europe was physical densification. While this isn’t new by any means, it certainly is a sign of growth in a startup community. It also builds a physical awareness for those passing through or deciding to move to a community.
In London, the immediate area surrounding the tech offices are coffee shops, juice bars, pop-up retail, major construction, and ball pit conference rooms (because why not). All of these are coalescing in the Shoreditch area of East London. See
my ball pit photo
from the last Bloombites.
In Dublin, the southeastern dockyards have tons of cranes sky high (especially when viewed from the Guinness Gravity Bar), and there’s even a
tourist attraction
to take a tour of the tech campuses of Google, Facebook, Airbnb, and local startups, aka Silicon Docks.

And in Belfast, the great startup and tech campus of
Catalyst
is building a tech hub along the water in the former Titanic dock yards, bringing big enterprise tech and startups under one roof. The city center seems to also be gearing up for growth as the first downtown campus of Ulster University is under development. It will be interesting to see what grows around it. Shout out to
Peter Edgar
and
Shauna Collins
for your time with me and your energy into the ecosystem! Sorry to miss you
Steve Orr
, but we shall meet again soon.

Sharing ideas around the world of what our tech ecosystems need for holistic growth may not sound like a vacation to some of you, but it certainly energizes me. Speaking of which, it’s time to get back to work!
Cheers!
