First, we would like to dedicate this issue to
Walter Monk
, our father of the seas. This 101-year-old oceanographer had such a lasting impact on our oceans through research, and did it all from Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla.
Monk’s celebrated research is a wonderful example of all the exciting things going on in San Diego and why scores of entrepreneurs call this home. His legacy will certainly live on. Meanwhile, San Diego’s startup ecosystem continues to be on fire. Just recently, another unicorn was
born
with TuSimple, a San Diego and Beijing-based unmanned trucking tech company. Usually Q1 is slow in the funding world, but we haven’t taken our foot off the gas from Q4 and we like it! In other funding news, a large group of local angels helped fund a new hard kombucha maker, JuneShine, who is now
taking over
the Ballast Point headquarters in Scripps Ranch. Out with the old, in with the new. Local startup QuickCarl
joined
the latest TechStars Anywhere cohort as well.
I’m excited to be part of helping to expand this ecosystem. Join me at
UCSD
Ignite Conference
on Feb. 20 at 2 p.m. for a panel on small businesses vs. startups with Jimmy Kim of Sendlane and Jon Berke, previously co-founder of Sigalert.com (Yes that Sigalert! Founded in San Diego - who knew?!) And then on Feb. 21 at 3 p.m. Gregg Anderson of 41 Orange and I will lead a
workshop
on KPIs in a startup.
What else is going on in San Diego? We’d love to know so we can spread the love!
Cheers!

Andrea
, who is writing the Active.com mafia series, was born and raised in San Diego, aside from stints in Colorado and coastal North Carolina as a military brat. She taps into her creativity by surfing, hiking, and trips to the desert for off-roading. Oh, and she loves fish tacos and beer.
|
Sandy
, author of our original AzTech series, is a recent graduate of SDSU and gets her kicks going to farmers markets, Kindred, working out, and enjoying the architecture around Balboa Park. She is also all about tacos, and is obsessed with Trader Joe’s.
