Market News
With warm weather in the forecast and birds chirping in the trees, this Saturday is sure to be a beautiful one and we can't think of a better place to spend it than at the Hollywood Farmers Market. Our vendors will be here bright and early at 8 am to bring you all the fresh cut flowers, sweet spring carrots, piping hot coffee, and tasty pastries your heart desires.
It's May, the perfect time to pick up some flowers for your garden, and oh boy do our vendors have all kinds of options for you. This Saturday you can find hostas at Dancing Light Ranch, dahlia bulbs at Old House Dahlias, alyssum at Gales Meadow Farm, and sunflowers at Sun Gold Farm.
With all this fresh spring produce in season this week is the perfect time to make the perfect salad. Stop by Sweet Leaf and Stoneboat Farms to pick up beautiful spring salad mixes, head over to Big B and Deep Roots Farms for colorful beats, and top it all off with vinegar for sipping or mixing into dressing from Sage & Sea Farms.
We have a new crepe vendor joining us at market this Saturday. Suzette Creperie will be offering sweet and savory crepes as well as lavender lemonade and French almond brown butter teacakes.
You may know vendor Tabor Bread from their delicious loaves and pastries, but did you know they also sell grains? Stop by their booth for fresh mulled local grain flours sold by the 1 lb bag and get baking!
Now that the steady rain has started to give way to sunshine, our community library and community bag collection will be out at market. Head toward the center of market between Nourishment and our music tent to find a variety of cookbooks, food magazines, and nutrition guides to take home. Stop by the market's 44th and 45th Ave entrances to grab a reusable bag from our collection.
Old House Dahlias returns to market this week with their delightful dahlia bulbs. Check out the video link below to learn how to plant those terrific tubers.

Asparagus and Leek Soup

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 large leeks, finely chopped (white and pale green parts) about 2 cups worth
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 2 bunches of asparagus, trimmed and cut into 1 inch pieces (about 2 pounds)
  • 5 cups vegetable stock + additional to thin if needed
  • Salt and pepper
  • 1/4 cup Creme Fraiche (or full fat plain yogurt)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • Minced parsley for serving

Melt the butter in a heavy bottom pan over medium heat. Add the chopped leeks and cook, stirring occasionally until fragrant, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and asparagus and cook for 1 minute longer.

Add the vegetable stock and a hefty pinch of salt and pepper. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low and cook until the asparagus is tender. About 20 minutes. Remove from the heat and transfer the soup to a high speed blender along with the Creme Fraiche or yogurt. Blend on high until smooth and creamy. Return the soup to the pot, add the lemon juice and keep on low for about 5 minutes to let the flavors meld. Taste for seasonings and add more salt and pepper if necessary.

Divide between bowls and top with fresh minced parsley.
