Market Updates
Dust off your largest pots because September is the month for saucing. Our Pacific Northwest bounty is beginning its peak, and it is time to capture all of your favorite summer flavors for the winter. This weekend you will find great deals on tomato boxes from Deep Roots Farm, Sweet Leaf Organic, and Happy Harvest Farms. As for apple sauce, right now you can get $15 fruit boxes with a value of $25 at Kiyokawa Family Orchards. You will find mountains of peppers, corn for your relishes and so much more. As well, Persephone Farm still has openings for their CSA. If you missed signing up earlier this season or are in the market for a winter CSA, ask at their booth for more details.

We have an exciting announcement for those of you who love Alleamin African Kitchen's delicious sambusas and chicken over rice. You can now find Alleamin's expanded menu at their brand new brick-and-mortar restaurant Montavilla. You'll find all your farmers market favorites and more, on Tuesdays through Sundays (takeout only). If you haven't tried their food yet, it is an absolute must.

There will be an amazing spread to choose from this weekend. As you're loading up groceries, don't forget to stop by Unger Farms, as this will be their last week for season.

Our month-long photo contest kicks off on Instagram!
This Saturday kicks off the month of September at the farmers market, and with it our month-long photo contest! We are running the contest on Instagram; just post your photo with the hashtag #hfmphotocontest to enter the contest. Recipe of the Week: Farro with Cherry Tomatoes, Corn and Basil
Another great recipe from Six Seasons by Joshua McFadden. Lots of substitutions are possible here! If you don't have farro, you can substitute another grain berry, including wheat berries available from Sun Gold Farm. Finely sliced red onion is a good substitute for scallions.

3 cups cooked and cooled farro
2 cups torn croutons
1 bunch scallions, trimmed
1 pint cherry tomatoes, halved
4 ears sweet corn, husked
1 handful fresh mint leaves
1 handful fresh basil leaves
1/4 cup red wine vinegar
1 teaspoon dried chili flakes
salt and pepper
olive oil

Put the cooked farro in a big bowl. Add the croutons, scallions and tomatoes. Using a paring knife, cut the corn kernels off the cobs into the bowl. Once the kernels are removed, scrape the cobs with the back of the knife blade to capture the milky pulp.

Add the mint and basil and toss everything together. Add the vinegar, chili flakes, 1 teaspoon salt and several twists of freshly ground black pepper and toss again. Season to taste.

Finish with 1/3 cup olive oil and toss. Serve lightly chilled.

Heirloom Tomatoes
Happy Harvest Farm
Jeff at Happy Harvest has a bumper crop of heirloom tomatoes this year! This week he'll have Genuwine, Cherokee Purple, and Brandywine - all delicious full flavored slicers - both sold individually and by the 25 lb box. Now is the time to enjoy late summer tomatoes, or stock the pantry or freezer with preserves!

Vegetarian Sambusas
After taking a few weeks off to open their new restaurant in the Montavilla neighborhood (now open for takeout), Alleamin is back at the farmers market! If you haven't yet tried their veggie sambusa, these delicious treats have a light crispy outside and are filled with flavorful potatoes, veggies and spices on the inside.
