Market Updates

Did you come looking for strawberries last week but leave empty-handed? Never fear, as Deep Roots Farm will have a big supply of these beauties at market this Saturday. Happy Harvest is also coming back to market this Saturday, with lots of strawberries, rhubarb, and fresh eggs! We're excited to announce the return of Marty, from Columbia River Fish, with fresh, wild chinook salmon, and Seed & Thistle Apothecary, with medicinal herb starts and handmade tinctures, teas, and other tonics. Herr's Family Farm will be back after a week away, as will Home Grown Food Products. If you missed last Saturday, you missed the return of market superstars Big B Farm! Frank will be back at market along with the whole Big B gang this Saturday.

Buns on the Run and Lonesome Whistle are taking the week off, but will return next week. There's only one more week of the market in its smaller, "winter"-sized setup on Hancock St. Starting next Saturday, May 2, we'll expand to our full season size in the Grocery Outlet parking lot. Stay tuned for a bunch of exciting new vendors that will be joining us next week, and in the meantime, enjoy the smaller, cozy market!

See you at market!

Volunteer Orientation Saturday, April 25th
Ari Rosner, Community Volunteer Coordinator
Interested in volunteering at the Hollywood Farmers Market this season? Mark your calendar for our annual Volunteer Orientation on Saturday, April 25th from 11 am to 12:30 pm, at the Rose City Presbyterian Church at 1907 NE 45th Ave.

The Hollywood Farmers Market wouldn't be possible without the help of its volunteers. Every Saturday it takes 20 to 25 volunteers to keep the market running smoothly. A few early-riser volunteers show up at 7am to set up the  market's  equipment (canopies, umbrellas, tables, chairs, and signage) before customers begin arriving. During the market, volunteers answer customers' questions, pass out fliers about upcoming market events, allow vendors working solo to take breaks, do crowd counts, and anything else that comes up during the course of a busy market. Then, at the end of the market, they take all of our equipment down and repack our storage space. Volunteers enable our market to function, and they make it fun!

Farmers markets are inherently social places. According to a volunteer guys Project for Public Spaces study, a customer has an average of 15-20 social interactions at a farmers market, versus 1-2 at a grocery store. And for volunteers, that number is much higher. Even for the setup and breakdown volunteers, who mainly just interact with each other, the camaraderie and sense of shared purpose is strong.

On Saturday mornings, the mood at the information booth (which is the home base for market volunteers) is warm and inviting. New volunteers are welcomed heartily and quickly absorbed into the community, and returning volunteers are greeted as old friends. Some of the volunteers are people I've known for years, and every Saturday at the market is something we share with each other and with the neighborhood.
If you're interested in learning more about volunteering but can't make it to the orientation, no worries: contact me (Ari Rosner) at 503.803.7279, or send me an email at volunteers@hollywoodfarmersmarket.org and we can schedule you and orient you on market day.
