The Long Gun Registry is Back

Gun crime in Canada is typically committed by criminals who posses firearms illegally, and frequently connected to gang violence. Most often, the guns used in these crimes are smuggled across the border by gangs.

So what has the Liberal Government done to fight gun crime?

They have persistently eased the criminal penalties for gun smuggling and illegal gun possession throughout their time in office. By voting against Bill C-238, this government opposed tougher sentences for gun smuggling and the possession of illegal firearms. By pushing through Bill C-5, they are trying to remove required jail times for major firearms offences.

Instead, their 'solution' has been to attack responsible, legal firearms owners.

These gun owners have completed firearms safety courses, taken exams, and passed thorough background checks in order to prove that they are capable of owning and handling firearms safely and responsibly.

They use their firearms to feed their families and continue long-standing traditions by hunting. Others own firearms to protect their farms and livestock. Some rural Canadians need to carry firearms for protection against predators they might encounter in the wilderness.

These are important and often necessary activities for many Canadians.

Again and again, this government chooses to go after a group of people who are not responsible for the problem, all while letting criminals and gangsters off the hook.

Today, the Liberals added insult to injury by announcing the re-introduction of the Long Gun Registry. This failed piece of legislation will do nothing to fight to gun crime in Canada and will only create headaches and extra paperwork for legal gun owners.

Trudeau's anti-firearm policies are not designed to fight gun crime or ensure public safety.

His attacks on legal gun owners are fear-mongering attempts to win political points from progressive radicals who don't understand firearms to begin with.

Conservatives will continue to fight for Canada's firearm owners, and against irrational policies like the Long Gun Registry.
