National Nursing Week
It's National Nursing Week, and we want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to all our nursing alumni. You've always been there to care for us and our loved ones when we've needed you the most, and even more so this past year.

Thank you!

National Police Week
National Police Week is an opportunity to acknowledge and thank our brave officers for the work they do to keep our communities safe, and we wish to extend special gratitude to the members of our alumni community who have chosen a career in this profession. Thank you!

Wazeer Rahiman is a Police Foundations graduate (class of 2018), and a constable with the South Simcoe Police Service, and was recently featured in our 2021 Spring GeorgianView magazine.
Asian Heritage Month
May is Asian Heritage Month, and its theme this year is Recognition, Resilience and Resolve. We wish to acknowledge and thank the members of our Asian community for your contributions to Canada, our college and our alumni community.

One such alumnus is Kenta Shirakura, class of 2012 and 2015, who now works as the International Housing Co-ordinator at Georgian, helping to support our international student community. Read his story in our latest issue of GeorgianView.

Alumni spotlight
Melissa Brown, a graduate of the Human Resources Management program (class of 2015), is a Recruitment Specialist at Honda of Canada Mfg. (HCM). Her main focus is hiring for administration, purchasing, engineering, and skilled trades roles.

She is also a project leader for the launch of Business Resource Groups (BRG) at HCM. BRGs are associate-led, company-supported groups whose members are aligned across broad constituencies such as gender, race/ethnicity, ability, life-stage, experiences, and other dimensions of diversity. It’s an initiative she is proud of.

“I enjoy working at Honda for the opportunities they provide to develop yourself professionally,” she says. “No idea is a bad idea, and through continuous improvement initiatives, we are encouraged to find improvements and are rewarded for doing so. The people at HCM are another reason I love coming to work.”

Although the Alliston automotive plant recruits from within whenever possible, co-op students will often return to HCM as production associates and then seek an internal job posting for a role in the area more aligned to their chosen career path. Being ‘inside’ allows them the first chance at the opportunity.

Why should Georgian grads apply to HCM?

“The opportunities are endless, the people are welcoming, and it is a safe and respectful workplace. No idea is a bad idea, and there is a lot of room to move around in the organization,” says Melissa.
Alumni step in to help co-op students
Anmol Rana is a graduate of Georgian's Computer Systems Technician - Networking program (class of 2020), and returned to his college recently to help support the next generation of students coming behind him.

Georgian's Co-operative Education and Career Success (CECS) team recently partnered with the Alumni Relations team to provide learning opportunities for students whose co-op placements had been impacted by COVID-19.

Two ideas emerged to help students. The first was Industry Networking Panel discussions for Business and Computer Studies students, co-hosted by Alumni Relations and CECS, and the second was one-to-one mentor interviews for students in the Automotive, Aviation, Business, Computer Studies and Engineering program areas.

Nearly 200 students were supported through these initiatives between March 24 and April 7.

Alumni were prepared in advance with an understanding of the necessary student learning outcomes, and geared information to support student needs, while providing an opportunity for students to ask questions and seek additional insight into their chosen industries.

Anmol was one of these graduates, providing mentor support to three students.

“I was able to share my experience and the hardships I faced when landing a full-time job, as well as insights on how I did it, hoping they'll be able to learn something from it,” he says. “Also, my experience as an industry professional helped with most of the interview questions that they had.”

Georgian's alumni relations team is preparing to provide similar learning opportunities to students this summer and we need the help of our graduates! If you're an alumnus willing to participate in an alumni panel or mentor discussions with students - we'd love to hear from you. Please email [email protected].
