Georgian marks 100,000 alumni milestone
|
|
Georgian has officially reached 100,000 graduates, marking the significant milestone in its 56-year history during recent convocation ceremonies on Oct. 23 and 24.
At this year’s convocation, 1,330 students crossed the stage, graduating from seven campuses and 130+ programs. During the ceremony, new graduates were welcomed to the alumni family by alumnus Jon Montgomery, (class of 2000, hon degree 2015) Canadian Olympian and host of The Amazing Race Canada. During his virtual address, Jon encouraged grads to follow their paths and be true to themselves.
As Georgian celebrates the collective contributions of its growing alumni community, the college is also marking this occasion by sharing inspiring stories from across the alumni network. Appropriately themed, our “stories behind the numbers” segment will be featured throughout November on social media and in the digital issue of GeorgianView magazine, hitting mailboxes in December.

Students need your help
The Georgian Food Locker is experiencing a dramatic increase in demand this year. During the first two months of the semester, 900 students across Georgian’s seven campuses have sought emergency food assistance through the student-run Georgian Food Locker. That’s a 24 per cent increase over the same period last year. The good news is belairdirect has stepped up to help us raise much needed funds to help our students. Take part in our time-limited matching campaign, where any donations to the Georgian Food Locker will be matched, dollar-for-dollar, up to $25,000.
For example, with a $100 donation you can help one or more students secure emergency food supplies for a week. A $500 donation to Food Locker helps five or more students with groceries.

Alumni help keep students warm while offering field placement positions
Rebecca Dewar (Fundraising and Resource Management, class of 2008) and Hazel Rawn (Developmental Service Worker, class of 1979) have managed to address two critical community needs as they created their social enterprise.
The two alumni, who both work in the Community Integration Through Co-operative Education (CICE) program at Georgian, envisioned an opportunity that would help CICE students develop valuable soft skills while at the same time, help struggling students to make ends meet. Through a series of events and securing clothing donations from a manufacturer, the Clothing Locker was born.
“We thought it was the perfect pairing,” said Rebecca while arranging clothes on racks with the help of Sean Afonso-Daley, a second-year CICE student on a field placement. Initially starting the operation in their office, it became difficult to showcase clothes in a busy area.
Thanks to creative planning, the Clothing Locker is now located in a room accessible at the back of the Georgian Stores on the Barrie Campus. Not only does the space allow the clothes to be properly hung on racks, but it also affords students a more private experience as they browse for needed items.
