This month’s featured owner of Aurora is Lisa Bechel.
Lisa Bechel, formerly Schumacher, came to Aurora in the summer of 2019. She had some experience working direct care in her home state of Nebraska and knew that she wanted to continue working in the field when she and her then fiancé moved to Wisconsin. After doing some job searching, she found Aurora. According to Lisa, “During my interview with Kris Carlsrud, I instantly knew that this is where I wanted to work. I had never felt more comfortable during an interview, so I was very happy when I was offered a position and gladly accepted.”
Lisa’s journey within the company began as a direct support staff at 010 in Menomonie, and she became the PM shortly after that. In the spring of 2021, she took an admin position in the Menomonie office for Aurora Community Health and later took on tasks for Aurora Residential, supporting the Central and Northwest Regions. She can be seen at sites meeting with new Program Managers to train them. She also assists when there is a new consumer by getting their information into RTasks and to the pharmacy so that consumers have their medications the day they move in. She assists with transports, taking consumers to appointments, and goes to the site to help when consumers are having a tough time. These are just a few of the things Lisa does. She is a big help with any need the operations or office may have!
When asked what she enjoys about her job, Lisa said, “In my current role, I enjoy the versatility and flexibility. Each day is very different. I enjoy being busy, but I also enjoy having the ability to be in the sites and spending time with consumers.” When she isn’t at work, newly-wed Lisa says she enjoys spending time with family and friends, camping, fishing, sightseeing, and reading a good book.

This month, we feature the services provided by the IT Department, made up of Dustin Doornink, Director of IT; Juan Gordillo, Assistant IT Director; and Kevin Crowell, IT Specialist.
The Information Technology Department, also known as IT, is a critical component of Aurora’s success. Not only does this department oversee the installation and maintenance of our computer network systems, it also makes it possible for us to communicate, collaborate, and automate routine tasks. Without this important service, we would not be able to perform countless duties or responsibilities as efficiently as we currently do.
This department’s main goal is to provide technology resources that improve each employee’s efficiency and performance. In order to keep the technology services running smoothly, the IT Department focuses a great deal of energy and effort on installing, updating, upgrading, and maintaining all technology-related equipment. This includes servers, backup storage, network/security devices, laptops, copiers, printers, scanners, faxes, cell phones and phone systems.
IT manages email communications, the Aurora website, our Citrix network, Residex, UKG/Workforce Dimensions, and Procentive. More specifically, every time an email is sent, a timestamp is made, Residential documents services, or services are billed through Procentive, IT is at the helm to ensure that all of these systems are operating optimally. To ensure compliance with security standards, IT also administers employees’ login credentials and permissions for all of the different systems.
When technical issues come up, IT helps anyone using an Aurora technology system to find solutions to any question or issue through the IT Help Desk service. This might entail installing new software or hardware, repairing hardware that has become faulty, training employees in the use of new software or security practices, or updating old systems and software. No matter what, IT does everything they can to get us back on track when any technical issues arise.
Thanks for everything you do, Dustin, Juan, and Kevin!

Vehicle Expenses
— by Marni Waznik —
|
|
Aurora currently owns 74 vehicles. They are an important part of the services we provide since it’s critical that those we serve have the opportunity to get into their communities and engage in the activities any of the rest of us do. Some organizations ask employees to use their own vehicle for such purposes, but Aurora has never expected employees to take on that cost or liability.
Here’s some information important to Aurora owners about our vehicles:
In 2020, we had 11 vehicle incidents; in 2021, there were 12 incidents. So far in 2022, we have had 8 incidents—4 of them when employees were backing/parking a vehicle, and 4 when the vehicle was struck by something (rock, other vehicle, gazebo!). We spend $14,000/month on vehicle payments and allowances and our insurance costs us $83,672/year.
Like our personal insurance and Workers’ Compensation insurance, our use of it drives the premium. Backing and parking incidents are entirely avoidable, so please be aware of your surroundings. When you are about to use a vehicle, Get Out And Look (GOAL) to heighten your awareness. Use back-up cameras and a spotter if one is available.
Be safe and cautious!

September is National Self Care Month
You’ve heard it…put on your own oxygen mask before assisting others. We are in the assisting business which means we need to care for ourselves. There have been alarming increases in mental health problems over the past couple of years, so let’s focus on how to care for our mental health.
Some tips from the National Institute of Mental Health:
- Get regular exercise. Just 30 minutes of walking every day can help boost your mood and improve your health. Small amounts of exercise add up, so don’t be discouraged if you can’t do 30 minutes at one time.
- Eat healthy, regular meals and stay hydrated. A balanced diet and plenty of water can improve your energy and focus throughout the day. Also, limit caffeinated beverages such as soft drinks or coffee.
- Make sleep a priority. Stick to a schedule, and make sure you’re getting enough sleep. Blue light from devices and screens can make it harder to fall asleep, so reduce blue light exposure from your phone or computer before bedtime.
- Try a relaxing activity. Explore relaxation or wellness programs or apps, which may incorporate meditation, muscle relaxation, or breathing exercises. Schedule regular times for these and other healthy activities you enjoy such as journaling.
- Set goals and priorities. Decide what must get done now and what can wait. Learn to say “no” to new tasks if you start to feel like you’re taking on too much. Try to be mindful of what you have accomplished at the end of the day, not what you have been unable to do.
- Practice gratitude. Remind yourself daily of things you are grateful for. Be specific. Write them down at night, or replay them in your mind.
- Focus on positivity. Identify and challenge your negative and unhelpful thoughts.
- Stay connected. Reach out to your friends or family members who can provide emotional support and practical help.
The better you care for yourself, the better you care for your family, friends, and consumers! Take good care!

As a motorist, safety on the roadways is your responsibility—here are a few reminders to keep in mind as the school year kicks off and buses are back on the road:
- It's illegal to pass a school bus that is stopped to load or unload children.
- Flashing yellow lights alert motorists that buses are preparing to stop.
- Red flashing lights and an extended stop sign indicate that traffic moving in both directions of an undivided roadway must come to a stop, and may not pass the bus for any reason until the stop sign is retracted.
- When warning flashers are blinking in a school zone, vehicles must stop for pedestrians in crosswalks or at intersections.
- Bus stops are typically dark in the morning, particularly during winter months. Therefore, keeping speeds down and watching for pedestrians is critical.
- Buses make frequent stops—take extra caution when following a bus.
Safe driving habits will protect you, your passengers and other motorists, and pedestrians sharing the road. Always avoid distractions, keep your speed down and be patient.
