A Word from the Pastor

February 2, 2024

In a very short time, Lent will begin. The traditional Lenten practices of prayer, fasting and almsgiving will be encouraged for each of us as we are able. I’d like to say a word about almsgiving.

A simple definition for almsgiving is the act of giving charity to another. Almsgiving has been around for thousands of years and is referred to as charity, philanthropy, or giving to the poor. Giving (alms) is the primary means by which many Christians and other faith traditions express faith. Some Christians tithe 10% of their income (or something close to it) to the church, give offerings to pastors and missionaries and attend camps, retreats, and mission trips.

Giving alms, or giving to the poor, is another way someone can express their faith and is a way in which they can put “love our neighbors as ourselves” into action. That said, giving to the poor is not about giving handouts, nor is it about charity; it is about sharing one’s blessings with those experiencing poverty. It also provides a way for us to share in the Church’s ministry of evangelization and outreach.

Not all of us can directly serve the poor, or educate people in the faith, or evangelize in formal ways. But we can support the various ministries and agencies of the Church in San Diego that reach out on our behalf.

By contributing to the Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA) of the Diocese of San Diego, we are engaging in almsgiving. Lent is a good time to remind ourselves of our obligation to share with others. No matter how much we have been given, we each have an obligation to share.

You will be receiving a mailing from me that will once again ask for your support for ACA. The brochure describes the many ways people are helped through our donations. Our almsgiving extends our love and concern to those we could never be able to reach. I ask you to prayerfully consider how much you can contribute. Give from the heart; let it express your faith.

I know that some people are concerned that this money might be used to pay legal fees or taken through lawsuits. Since this money is contributed for a specific purpose and designated funds, it cannot be touched by the courts or used for any other purpose. The intention of the donor must be respected. It would be a shame if the good works that ACA makes possible were deprived of our support because of needless fears about legal proceedings. I can assure you that your donations will be used only for the purpose which you intend them to.

On behalf of all those who benefit from your contribution, thank you for your generosity and almsgiving. As Mother Teresa said: “It is not how much we give, but how much love we put into the giving.”

Mass with Anointing of the Sick

On Saturday, February 10 at 11:00 am we will celebrate a Mass in our church that will include the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. The Mass will be bilingual and the anointing will be given in the language of your choice (English or Spanish)

Children of the Immaculate Heart

Children of the Immaculate Heart has served survivors of sex trafficking in San Diego for 10 years through our St. Bakhita Program for women and their children. We provide holistic care by addressing the physical, emotional, social and spiritual wellbeing of the person to focus on a person's strengths. We are now offering immediate assistance in our emergency mobile clinic that provides help with getting services, food, clothing, and toiletries.

Our 11th Annual Gala benefiting human trafficking survivors is February 10th, 2024 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at St. Therese of Carmel Catholic Church, 4355 Del Mar Trails Rd., San Diego, CA 92130. The evening includes appetizers, dinner, dessert, wine, beer, a live band, and a silent auction. Our keynote speaker is Auxiliary Bishop Ramon Bejarano and we will hear a special talk from a Client of Children of the Immaculate Heart. RSVP is required. Background on the Gospel Reading

Today we continue to read from Mark’s Gospel, learning more about the ministry of Jesus. Jesus cured Simon’s mother-in-law, and she immediately began to serve Jesus and his disciples. Jesus also cured many others who were brought to him, healing their illnesses and driving out demons. As we will see throughout Mark’s Gospel, Jesus did not permit the demons to speak because they knew his identity and would have revealed it to those who were present.

On the morning after this busy day, Jesus retreated in prayer, but was pursued by Simon and others who brought news that many people were looking for him. At this point in Mark’s Gospel, we begin to see a distinct role for the inner circle of Jesus’ disciples—they act as intermediaries between Jesus and the people. Jesus reports to his disciples that they need to leave Capernaum to preach in other places.

Today’s Gospel completes a picture of Jesus’ ministry: preaching, curing the sick, driving out demons, and then moving on to continue this work in another place. Mark's Gospel tells us that Jesus did this throughout Galilee.

Jesus’ compassion and healing of the sick is a sign of the Kingdom of God. The Church continues to extend Christ’s healing presence to others in its ministry to the sick. In the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, the Church prays for spiritual and physical healing, forgiveness of sins, and comfort for those who are suffering from illness.

In today’s Gospel we also notice the importance of prayer in Jesus’ daily life. Jesus rose early in the morning, removed himself from the crowds, and went to a deserted place to pray. When the disciples found him, he told them that it was time to move on. We believe that in his prayers Jesus found guidance and direction from God. We also bring our decision-making to God in prayer, asking for his guidance and direction in our lives.

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity Concludes

In the North County of San Diego, the annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unity concluded with a beautiful prayer service at St. Andrew Episcopal Church in Encinitas. St. Patrick’s choir provided beautiful hymns that greatly enhanced the celebration. Our parish was also well-represented by many parishioners and a large representation of our parish staff (including three of our priests). We are already looking forward to next year’s celebration.

Bake Sale

The ladies of the Altar Society will be having a Bake Sale on the Church Patio next Sunday, February 11. Stop by our table to pick up your Valentine treats to eat before Lent starts on Ash Wednesday, February 14th. Baked good donations are appreciated.

Mark your calendars for our Easter Boutique which will be held the weekend of March 23rd and 24th. We are looking for donations of gently used items to sell at this event (please no furniture or clothing) We need Easter Baskets and toys to fill the baskets for the children.

We want to thank the church community for all their support over the years. Because of your support we made over $6,000 at our Christmas Boutique.

Scout Sunday

This Sunday we welcome Boy Scout Troop 748 as they celebrate Scout Sunday on February 4. Members of the troop will be present at the 9:00 am Mass and have an informational table on the patio that morning. Stop by and learn more about the good things the Boy Scouts are doing.

Haydn Concerto Number 1 in

C Major

Joseph Haydn composed Concerto n. 1 in C major for cello and orchestra. Here it is performed by Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie, under direction of Vahan Mardirossian. It was during the semifinals of the Queen Elisabeth Competition - Cello 2022.

The most recent blood drive at our parish netted 24 pints of blood. That is trending up from last year. The blood bank is very happy with our response and extends its thanks to our parish for our support.

The next blood drive at our parish is May 19, 2024.

“En aquel tiempo, al salir Jesús de la sinagoga, fue con Santiago y Juan a casa de Simón y Andrés. La suegra de Simón estaba en cama, con fiebre, y enseguida le avisaron a Jesús. Él se le acercó, y tomándola de la mano, la levantó. En ese momento se le quitó la fiebre y se puso a servirles”. (Evangelio según san Marcos 1:29-39). Dentro de 10 días terminamos con el Tiempo Ordinario e iniciamos el tiempo de Cuaresma con el Miércoles de Ceniza. Y en este tiempo de cuaresma somos invitados a examinar nuestra vida y miremos esas actitudes o hábitos que tenemos que nos apartan de Dios. ¿Qué es lo que vemos en nuestros teléfonos? ¿Son cosas buenas que nos dan paz, o son cosas que nos quitan la paz y nos traen conflictos? ¿Cómo hablamos? Sabemos orar a Dios, dándole gracias por tantas bendiciones que nos da. ¿Pero que sale de nuestra boca cuando alguien nos quiere corregir? O, ¿qué tal cuando “nos entran ideas” en nuestra mente, de ser algo incorrecto, de juzgar o criticar a alguien? ¿Qué hacemos con esos pensamientos? ¿Le pedimos a Dios que nos ayude con estos pensamientos y que no los quiete? O ¿le “damos vida” a esos pensamientos incorrectos?” En el Evangelio de este V Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario miramos que Jesús sana a muchos y a todos que le traen. Jesús quiere sanar a nosotros mismos. Las enfermedades vienen de diferentes maneras, físicas, psicológicas y espirituales. Lo bueno es que Dios nos ama. Que para Dios no hay pecado tan grande de su perdón. Dios esta listo para darnos su perdón, sanar nuestras heridas y caminar con nosotros. Dios nos espera, no se da por vencido, que nosotros tampoco nos cansemos de buscarlo y pedirle su ayuda.
