We missed last week’s edition, and we’ll blame Hurricane Helene. The destruction wrought by the storm is staggering, especially in the Carolinas. We know some of you are still very affected, such as continuing without power or other services. Please let us know if we can assist in any way.

It does prompt a lot of thinking about how to better prepare for unforeseen outcomes. As with investing, we must focus on the things within our control.



We hope the remainder of Hurricane season is as boring as can be.

• As a rule, we do not favor tariffs. We think they are a net negative for the economy and there are better ways to manage the economy.

• Drug overdose deaths have declined. We hope this is a long-term trend.



• Shohei Ohtani is the first major leaguer in history to record at least 50 home runs AND 50 stolen bases in the same season.



• MrBeast is arguably the most successful YouTuber in history. This is his production manual, and its insights into his process (and success) is really interesting.

• In the U.S., we pay much more for branded prescription drugs and much less for generics.
