Q: I’ve never used an app like Venmo to send money. Are these services a good idea?
A: Venmo, Cash App, PayPal and similar services are a fast and convenient way to share money, but it is important to remember that they are not banks, so some protections are not in place.
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau recently sent a reminder that payment apps are not federally insured institutions.
This is not to say that these apps should never be used, but users should be aware of the risks of any service.
