Q: I moved all my 401k funds to cash. I’m just worried about the economy. What should I do now?
A: We don’t recommend timing movement in and out of the market. It is simply too hard to correctly judge ideal exit and entry.
When we sell out completely, we may not be able to see a point where the risks we were seeing ever go away, so the buy signal you think you will recognize never appears.
So, first step is to hold the line in spite of challenges, as long as your goals and situation remain consistent.
But in this case, having sold, we recommend identifying a point in time, such as December or January, when you start to buy back into the market in installments. Be systematic and objective. Making a plan and sticking to it will help you get the better of emotion and sentiment. This matters because positive sentiment does not always correlate with a good time to buy.
