Q: How do you feel about the debt ceiling impasse?

A: We have long discussed the importance of reigning in government spending. We cannot continue current levels of deficit spending forever and both parties are responsible for our current condition. The debt ceiling is an issue because of a lack of discipline by lawmakers. Those bills must be paid to maintain confidence in the financial system and creditworthiness of the US government. Is it reasonable for fiscally conservative lawmakers to get spending controls in exchange for their vote to raise the ceiling? Yes. It is also possible that playing hardball on the debt ceiling will lead to a number of short-term issues that will affect the market.
It is not a situation that would merit deviating from current long-term plans, but we should be ready to weather the storm.
