A book on the pandemic by former FDA commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb is being praised for its explanation of how the CDC failed us in many ways, especially the failure to implement widespread testing. Alex Tabbarok reviewed Uncontrolled Spread for the Wall Street Journal. There is a new direct air capture plant removing carbon dioxide from the air and mineralizing it. It’s a small impact right now but is a good test of promising technology. The Courier tells the story of Greville Wynne, a British businessman who provided important service to the west during the Cold War. It is very well-done. One of the blessings of the early stage of the pandemic (for us) was being less busy. We were reminded of that experience while listening to this great 2007 TED talk, “In Praise of Slowness.” There is a brief discussion of sex, so we wouldn’t watch with the kids. Interestingly, while being too busy can make you unhappy, researchers have also found that having too much idle time can have the same effect. The sweet spot is somewhere in between.
