Welcome to February - we’re keeping it short and sweet this week!

Producing one ton of aluminum can release 16 metric tons of CO2. It is estimated that 486 million metric tons of aluminum will be needed by 2050 for solar panel frames. People did not always try to get 8 straight hours of sleep. Preindustrial sleep patterns may be helpful, but we shouldn’t infer too much. A sunlight-powered laser could be used instead of fossil fuels to kickstart chemical processes for the energy-intensive production of fertilizer. Apparently, organized crime groups hire good accountants. There are probably some other variables to consider.

Ask the Joes® Q: We don’t hear much about employment these days. What is the situation there? A: ADP provides an employment report that paints a negative picture for January. It’s usually a pretty good indication of what the overall employment situation is, so Friday’s report will probably be poor. In fact, by the time you read this the report will likely be available. Brad McMillan explains that it is hard to know the exact cause of this decline, but that Covid-related quarantines are almost certainly involved. He also predicts a bounce back in February, given the short-term impact that the Omicron wave seems to have.
