If the federal government shutdown continues, November SNAP benefits may not be issued. October SNAP benefits are not affected by the federal shutdown and have been distributed as expected. At this time, it is unclear whether benefits will be issued retroactively once the shutdown ends.

We recognize this may cause significant challenges for many of our SNAP households. Fairfax County is committed to supporting our community through these uncertain times. Resources are available if you need food or other financial assistance:

As of now, other public assistance programs such as Child Care Assistance and Referral (CCAR), Medical Assistance (Medicaid), and LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program) are not affected. We do not have updated guidance from the state about impacts to Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) benefits. Follow SNAP updates: https://bit.ly/SNAP-UPDATES

Beulah St Sanitary Sewer Repair Update

Update on the ongoing emergency sanitary sewer replacement project at Beulah Street: The emergency replacement work will be completed by Friday, October 31st.

During the project, an adjacent sewer line (marked on the map) was identified, originally planned for replacement at a later date. To minimize disruption to the public and proactively address any potential risks of pipe failure, replacement work for this additional sewer line will continue as part of the current mobilization.

It is estimated that the additional sewer line replacement work will go on until mid to end of December (weather permitting). During this work, the contractor will continue to maintain normal sewer flows and the connected residents will not experience disruption in sewer service. However, during work hours, the construction will require temporary modifications of traffic flow and proper signage/traffic control will be in place in accordance with VDOT lane closure requirements.

Community Meetings for Congregate Living Facilities

Learn about Potential Changes to Regulations for Congregate Living Facilities

On November 10 and 12, virtual community meetings will be held to discuss proposed updates to the Zoning Ordinance regarding congregate living facilities. A congregate living facility provides housing and supportive services in a supervised setting to individuals requiring those services. These changes would affect where such facilities may be located and how they are defined and reviewed.

Save the date to join one of the following community meetings on Microsoft Teams:

  • Monday, November 17, at 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.
  • Tuesday, November 18, at 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Each meeting will include the same content. The different dates and times are offered to provide flexibility for attendees. No registration is required.

As directed by the Board of Supervisors, county staff is developing a Zoning Ordinance amendment to update the definition, use permissions, and development standards for congregate living facilities. The proposed changes would revise the definition to clarify the types of populations served and expand where these facilities may be located, while ensuring compatibility with surrounding land uses.

Visit the County website to get meeting details and see additional project information: https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/planning-development/zoning-ordinance/congregate-living-facilities.

Public hearings on these Zoning Ordinance amendments have not been scheduled.

If you cannot attend the meetings, recordings will be available afterwards. If you have any questions or comments, email jennan.qato@fairfaxcounty.gov or call 703-324-1314.

Road Shark 2025 Results

Final Wave Complete: FCPD Reels in Nearly 50,000 Citations and Warnings

The Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD) has concluded the 2025 “Road Shark” campaign, issuing nearly 50,000 citations and warnings to dangerous drivers on Fairfax County roadways over the last five waves. This represents a 43% increase from 2024, when officers issued approximately 35,000 citations and warnings. During the final wave, conducted from October 13 through October 19, officers issued 10,565 citations and warnings, to include more than 900 for speeding violations.

Since March, Fairfax County officers and Virginia State Troopers have remained dedicated to promoting safer roadways by educating drivers and enforcing traffic laws. The Road Shark campaign continues to have a measurable impact across the county, resulting in hundreds of arrests for Driving While Intoxicated and hundreds of citations for Reckless Driving and the Unlawful Use of Handheld Devices While Driving.

As the campaign concludes, FCPD reminds all drivers to plan ahead, stay focused behind the wheel, obey posted speed limits, and never drive under the influence.

"Talk Trash" About the Plastic Bag Tax

Effective January 1, 2022, disposable plastic bags provided at point of sale to consumers at grocery stores, convenience stores and drugstores in Fairfax County are subject to a five-cent tax.

Revenue from this tax is being collected by the Virginia Department of Taxation and disbursed to each locality monthly. Fairfax County’s plastic bag tax ordinance tracks both enabling legislation passed in the 2020 session of the Virginia General Assembly, as well as guidelines adopted by the state Tax Commissioner.

The legislation requires that the plastic bag tax be collected by the retailer at time of purchase, with revenue to be allocated toward:

  • Environmental cleanup programs
  • Pollution and litter mitigation programs
  • Educational programs on environmental waste reduction
  • Provision of reusable bags to recipients of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or Women, Infants, and Children Program (WIC) benefits

2026 Shark Tank Technology Challenge

Fairfax County’s Department of Neighborhood and Community Services is now accepting entries in the Fairfax Area High School Student Shark Tank Technology Challenge. Initial proposals are due Dec. 19, 2025.

Open to all students in Fairfax County, Fairfax City and the City of Falls Church, the 2025-26 challenge invites youth to develop an innovative device or app that will have a positive impact in the lives of older adults, adults with disabilities, caregivers or wounded warriors. A winning device should enhance independence and life enjoyment for the target audience, foster social connection and help reduce isolation, and be truly innovative – either by introducing something new to the marketplace or significantly improving an existing product.

The winning students will be recognized with cash awards provided by sponsor IntegrityOne Partners. Winners will also be recognized by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors at a spring 2026 reception.

In the challenge, students make a pitch for funding to corporate leaders, community leaders and County supervisors. The winning pitch for the 2024-25 challenge came from Varsha Ayala and Eesha Viswanathan from The Madeira School in McLean. The team developed RapidX, a wearable health device that allows paramedics to retrieve patient data instantly, improving emergency response outcomes.

The competition is an initiative of the Fairfax 50+ Community Action Plan, which was passed by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors in 2014. It supports Fairfax County’s Economic Success Program that seeks to grow and diversify the economy through innovation, social equity and expansion of science, technology, engineering and math education.

Key Dates:

  • December 19, 2025 - Deadline for initial proposals
  • February 25, 2026 - Deadline for full submissions
  • April 10, 2026 – Board of Supervisors reception for challenge winners

Please visit the Shark Tank Technology Challenge website for more details, including a detailed application packet. For additional assistance, email NCSTechChallenge@fairfaxcounty.gov.

Scams Evolve and Change -- Be Aware & Protect Yourself

AARP estimates there are about 80 scams going on in our community at any one time. Learn how to recognize a potential scam and educate yourself about some of the ones our local law enforcement have seen in our neighborhoods recently.

Credit Card Skimming: Fairfax County detectives from the Police Financial Crimes Unit recently uncovered a credit card skimming operation that targeted ATMs and payment devices inside stores across the Richmond Highway corridor. Credit card skimming devices are often small, discreet and designed to blend in seamlessly with legitimate card readers. They can be found at ATMs, gas pumps and even self-checkout machines.

Jury Duty Scams: Court officials issued a warning to residents about a surge in jury duty scams. Residents, both from Fairfax County and surrounding jurisdictions, have reported receiving phone calls, voicemails and emails claiming they have missed jury duty, specifically federal grand jury duty. These communications falsely indicate that citations or arrest warrants have been issued and threaten the recipients with arrest by deputy sheriffs if they do not respond immediately to fix the supposed issues or click the link to ‘reschedule’.

Fire Inspector Scam: The Office of the Fire Marshal has received multiple reports of scam attempts by fire inspector impersonators demanding payment in order to keep a business open. Inspectors will NEVER contact a residence or business and demand payment. When inspections require payment, it will ONLY be collected through the Planning and Land Use System (PLUS). Inspectors will always be in uniform and have Fire Marshal identification. While Fairfax County codes apply to everyone, routine inspections do not take place in detached homes, townhomes, etc. If you have a question about the validity of an inspection or fee, contact the Office of the Fire Marshal at 703-246-4803. If you believe you have been scammed, contact your local police department and report it online.

It is impossible to list all of the known scams in one place, but being aware of current scams, and well-known warning signs, can help keep you, your information and your money safe. Learn more on the Scams topics page.
