MAC Provides Ukuleles for Sitton Elementary Students
When MAC staff member Craton Highways, who is a current MSW intern at SUN Community Schools, saw an opportunity to share the joy of music and learning, he catapulted advocacy for developing a ukulele class as a SUN after-school program at Sitton Elementary School in North Portland. Soon after, 16 students signed up for the class. A music instructor was recruited, and ukuleles were loaned to Sitton. The class kicked off in winter term 2022, and the kids have been having a blast. These meaningful arts experiences were made possible by Multnomah Arts Center Association and its generous donors. A young student in the class smiles as she proudly masters a G7 and says, “Look. This is the fourth chord I learned. I can play a whole song now!” This program will culminate at the end of spring term, and ukuleles will be returned. Musical experience with unlimited joys, however, will remain in their memories.
