African Dance for Everyone |
|
Take an introductory African dance class at MAC! Students will learn the basic vocabulary and movements of this form with an emphasis on body and spatial awareness, alignment, locomotor skills, and creativeness. Students will also learn about the history of African dance as a performing art and have an opportunity to showcase and share their moves on the last day of class. Karibu (Welcome)! Students have the option to perform in the Spring Dance Recital, Thursday, June 9 at 7:00 pm.

Introducing MAC's Newest Customer Service Lead |
|
Terrie Bernier officially joined the MAC team last month as our newest Customer Service Lead! She brings with her decades of experience working with Portland Parks & Recreation. She started her career in community building within PP&R as the indoor park supervisor at East Portland Community Center, eventually adding teaching classes to her EPCC portfolio (Baby Music, Sing Along, and Trampoline classes to name a few!).
She was then asked to run a drop-in art class at Montavilla Community Center and an Art Park at Matt Dishman Community Center. From there she transitioned in 2011 to working the front desk at EPCC and Montavilla Community Center.
In 2019, she was reassigned to Summer Free For All as their Recreation Leader. When COVID-19 hit the world in early 2020, Terrie continued her practice of wearing many different hats around PP&R. She helped out wherever the community and bureau needed her, serving as Golf Greeter, Parks Greeter, and Summer Free For All Lunch + Play Lead, while also working at the Portland Tennis Center and Gateway Urban Park before FINALLY landing at her permanent home here at the Multnomah Arts Center. Be sure to stop by the front desk at MAC to say hi to her!

There is still time to catch this beautiful show! In addition to what is on display in the gallery, Calligrapher friends have created Weathergrams to adorn some of MAC's trees and shrubs at the front of the building. Weathergrams were developed from renowned Northwest Calligrapher, Lloyd Reynolds, a respected professor and calligrapher at Reed College in Portland, Oregon. Reynolds describes Weathergrams as short poems written on craft paper in italic script that are hung on boughs of trees. This was a tradition carried forward by Christine Colasurdo with her students at MAC. Come see these bits of ephemeral magic as you visit this must-see show.

Farewell to the Soul Box Project |

We were fortunate to have housed the Soul Box Project at MAC for nearly three years since March 2019. We will miss their arts presence and dedicated staff.
In addition to two major Soul Box Project exhibits at MAC, we worked with them through the pandemic shut-down to enable the completion of their exhibit This Loss We Carry that went to the National Mall in October.
