| | Updates from the MAC Gallery | | |
May 16 - June 21, 2025
Front Gallery: Jennifer Rabin, sculpture
“I'm drawn to objects that society has given up on, thrown out, left to rot. They are ruins of their former selves, mirroring structures in our lives—our bodies, our family, our society—that have failed us or have broken down so badly that we no longer know what to do with them. How do we construct new shelters for ourselves? My work is an attempt to put those questions into material form, a small ongoing practice of radical optimism.” This show is made possible by grant support from the Regional Arts and Culture Council and the Oregon Arts Commission.
Center Gallery: Heidi Keith, figurative ink paintings
“Through ink, I embrace the unpredictable nature of water, allowing figures to emerge and dissolve within translucent layers. This process mirrors the impermanence of identity and the ways we are shaped by our environments, histories, and emotions. In a time of deep social and political division, these works reflect the ways we are all interconnected—how our choices, histories, and struggles ripple outward, shaping the collective experience.”
Joint reception: Saturday, May 31, 1:00-3:00 pm

June 27 - August 2, 2025
Front Gallery: Gesine Krätzner, ceramics
“I was born in Germany and studied art and animation in Stuttgart and London before coming to the US. Most of all I love to draw and sculpt squiggly creatures and to dream up small worlds and stories for them to inhabit. The work I’ll be showing consists of humorous sculptures depicting a motley crew of fantastical creatures.”
Center Gallery: Re Pinter, Molly Lecko Herro and Phoebe Mol; cartoon arts
“Molly Lecko Herro, Phoebe Mol, and Re Pinter iterate and refine creative ideas through a process of genuine investment in each other’s work that blurs the boundary of ownership, passing ideas back and forth until new concepts feel like they've always been there. Through comics, drawing, and storytelling, they reflect each other in subtle ways.”
Joint reception: Saturday, June 28, 1:00-3:00 pm
Artist talk with Re, Molly, and Phoebe: Saturday, July 12, 1:00-3:00 pm in the Center Gallery
| | |
August 8 - September 13, 2025
Front Gallery: Allana Nagy, mixed media
“Through ceramic sculpture and mixed-media installation, I explore the nuanced layers of human existence and my personal relationship with identity, grief, and nature. It is my hope that my art not only resonates with viewers on a visceral level but also prompts introspection and dialogue about the universal themes that unite us all.”
Center Gallery: Avery Nielsen Webb, photography
“This body of work is titled “Heading West." It explores the power dynamics of contemporary resource extraction and the surrounding landscape in the American northwestern states of Oregon and Washington. It examines how the environment is being fully industrialized to meet humanity's needs.”
Joint reception: Thursday, August 14, 6:00-8:00 pm

| | MAC Student Feature: Sophia Peck, flute student | | |
Special congratulations to flute student Sofia Peck, who spent her spring break visiting prospective colleges and auditioning for music scholarships and is soon heading off to college! Sofia has been studying with Jessica Bartlett at Multnomah Arts Center for about 12 years and has accomplished a high level of flute playing and general musicianship. She started just before her 7th birthday with great enthusiasm even though the flute was a bit big for her and she had trouble reaching all the keys. Through the years she has continued to study the flute and seek out music that she enjoys.
In recent years Sofia has set intensive goals for herself such as mastering college-level solos and auditioning into the top Metropolitan Youth Symphony orchestra. She achieved these goals as well as going on a tour in Spain with MYS, being accepted to play in the Greater Portland Flute Society’s yearly masterclass, and being asked to play Francois Borne’s Fantaisie Brillante with her high school band next month-a college level flute solo requiring a high level of musicianship and technique.
Ms. Peck will be heading off to college out of state next year and will be sorely missed for her fearless exuberance and mature approach. When asked about her time at MAC, Sofia said she enjoyed her lessons because she was encouraged to play music she really likes and was able to try many different genres, she enjoyed duets with her teacher, and found recitals to be low stress and supportive.
Good luck to you in your studies and we wish you the best in your future!
| | MAC Staff Spotlight: Megan Hatch, Gallerist | | |
Megan Hatch (she/her) joined the staff at MAC just as the gallery was beginning to re-open after the first two years of the pandemic. She inherited a space made vibrant under the long-time leadership of Jaye Campbell and has been guiding its continued evolution over the past three years. At the end of 2024, the use of the lobby at MAC as an additional exhibition space was formalized. Now known as The Front and Center Galleries at MAC, shows in each space are scheduled via an annual Call for Art. Last year’s Call garnered over 200 applications, which is double that of previous years. Decisions about who is chosen to exhibit are now made via a small committee that is formed anew each year, led by two artist-curators from the community. These individuals are also offered the opportunity to curate a group show with a theme of their choosing, which further expands exhibition opportunities for artists in our region.
Megan is also an artist, educator and independent curator. Lens-based art and mixed media painting form the main through lines of her arts practice. While she holds a degree in Studio Art from Carleton College, she is primarily a self-taught photographer. She is a Critical Mass finalist and a recipient of the Julia Margaret Cameron Award for Women Photographers. Her work has been exhibited internationally and is in collections both private and public. She is honored to be a member of the 2025 PNW Drawers Cohort at Blue Sky Gallery in Portland, OR; her work will be on view there through March of 2026. You can read more about her and her work at www.meganhatch.com.
