Celebrating 250 Years of the American Spirit — and the Small Businesses That Keep It Alive

As our nation prepares to celebrate the Semiquincentennial — America’s 250th anniversary in 2026 — communities across the country are reflecting on the people, ideas, and determination that helped shape our nation’s story. While history often highlights famous leaders and historic moments, America was also built by small business owners, tradespeople, shopkeepers, farmers, and entrepreneurs who created the foundation of their local communities.

Two hundred and fifty years later, that same spirit is alive and well right here in Montgomery.

From restaurants and retail shops to professional services, healthcare providers, contractors, wellness businesses, and family-owned operations, small businesses continue to play a vital role in shaping the character and strength of our community. They are more than storefronts and services — they are neighbors, sponsors, volunteers, mentors, employers, and community partners.

Local businesses support school programs, youth sports teams, charitable initiatives, township events, and fellow businesses. They create gathering places where friendships are formed, milestones are celebrated, and connections are made. In many ways, they help define what makes Montgomery special.

The entrepreneurial spirit that helped build America in 1776 still exists today in the business owners who take risks, invest in their dreams, and work hard every day to serve their community. Running a small business is never easy. It requires resilience, adaptability, creativity, and commitment — qualities that have always been part of the American story.

As we look toward America’s 250th anniversary, it is also an opportunity to recognize the importance of supporting local businesses and preserving the vibrant community they help create. Every time a resident chooses to shop locally, dine locally, or utilize a local service provider, they are investing back into the community they call home.

The future of strong communities depends on strong local businesses.

The Montgomery Business Association is proud to support and promote the businesses that contribute so much to Montgomery throughout the year. As we celebrate this historic milestone for our country, we also celebrate the entrepreneurs and small business owners who continue to carry forward the spirit of innovation, independence, and community that has defined America for 250 years.

Here’s to the next chapter — and to the local businesses helping write it.

What They Say About the MBA...

"One of the best parts of being an MBA member is the sense of community among local businesses. Hosting the April social gave us the opportunity to meet more business owners, build relationships, and be part of something that helps local businesses grow together."

FIFA World Cup 26 Coming to NJ - Are You Ready?

With FIFA World Cup matches being hosted just a short drive away at MetLife Stadium, our region is expected to welcome thousands of visitors, international media representatives, team personnel, and soccer fans from around the world. While many visitors will stay closer to New York City, hotels, restaurants, and businesses throughout Central New Jersey — including the Princeton and Montgomery areas — are expected to see increased traffic throughout the tournament.

Now is the perfect time for local businesses to think creatively about how to capitalize on this unique opportunity.

Consider offering limited-time World Cup-themed promotions, international menu specials, hospitality packages, shopping discounts, or special events tied to match days. Retailers can create soccer-themed displays, restaurants can host watch parties, and service businesses can promote special offers aimed at visitors exploring the area before or after matches.

Don't forget to make sure your Google Business Profile, website, social media accounts, and online directories are up to date. Visitors unfamiliar with the area will be relying heavily on online searches to decide where to shop, dine, and spend their time.

The World Cup only comes to our region once in a generation. Businesses that prepare early and promote themselves effectively can turn this global event into a valuable local opportunity.

Quick Ideas to Consider:

  • World Cup-themed sales or discounts
  • Match-day specials and watch parties
  • International food or drink offerings
  • Extended business hours during major matches
  • Social media contests and giveaways
  • Welcome promotions for hotel guests and visitors
  • Collaborations with neighboring businesses to create local experiences

Whether you're a retailer, restaurant, professional service provider, or local attraction, now is the time to start planning your game-winning strategy!
