On February 12th, we celebrated Mary Anne Doyle, CSJ, as she made the transition from Director of Sponsored Ministries to retiree. As we reflected on her work over the years, we thought of how she brought many gifts to her ministries. She developed our sponsored ministries, offering them the brilliant mind of a scholar — paired with the great-heartedness of a person who was in tune with her God...

Faith & Blue: Celebrating Sister Pat's Achievements

On Thursday, February 27th, Officer Christine Melia Marini presented Pat Andrews, CSJ, with the Faith and Blue award for her inexhaustible work with the Literacy Connection, as well as within the community advocating for the rights of new and soon-to-be citizens. Sister Pat is the first person to receive this honor from the Boston Police Department. Although the presentation of the award was a surprise to Sister Pat, it shouldn't have been; for decades, she has worked tirelessly for the dear neighbor, providing citizenship classes to those who otherwise might not have access to them.

Human Trafficking: Teaching & Finding Solutions

I've worked alongside Jeanmarie Gribaudo, CSJ, for approximately three years teaching students from Boston College about human trafficking, and each time I meet with a new group, new possibilities arise. For instance, one student in this current group is developing a new program for EMTs so that these healthcare workers will be able to recognize the signs of human trafficking and potentially intercept...

A Special Valentine's Day

Valentine’s Day was a different celebration for me this year. I traveled to Lynn to share an evening with the MARIAS. The invitation came by way of Magalie, sharing the concerns and needs of her women’s group at our previous monthly meeting. Magalie told us that jackets were needed for the women and children. Coincidentally, Maryann Enright, CSJ, had just received a large donation of new jackets for Catholic Charities...

Together, Coping with Challenges

On the evening of January 30th, Casserly House coordinated a collaborative event, “Community Workshop on Health and Well-being.” Immigrants, refugees, and asylees who live, work and study in Roslindale gathered to learn about the signs and symptoms of stress, to share challenges and to discuss coping strategies and available resources. Sixty-five (65) people gathered at the Roslindale Branch of Boston Public Library with the Behavioral Health Team of Greater Roslindale Medical and Dental Center as presenters...

Celebrating Saint Patrick & Saint Joseph

Visit the archives display in the chapel lobby to see how sisters celebrated St. Patrick's Day and Saint Joseph's in the past. From mementos to photos, much can be gleaned from the varied items present. Many of our sisters emigrated — or had ancestors who emigrated from — Ireland, and so Saint Patrick's Day, already much-loved in Boston, serves as a large part of the culture of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Boston. Saint Joseph, our patron saint was a carpenter, and in this month, we celebrate his gentle presence & his consistent guidance.
