Spreading the Word about MPH
Admissions Info Sessions for Interested Families Coming Up
Do you know someone who may be interested in exploring an MPH education for their child? The Admissions Office will be holding (virtual) January Admissions Information Sessions beginning next week! Families can get more info and register here on the MPH Admissions page.

We also have the December edition of our Discover MPH Admissions e-newsletter to share with inquiring folks (and it happens to include the registration link for those info sessions). Please forward it along to a friend or family member who may be interested. After all, the endorsement of our extended MPH community members makes for the best kind of encouragement for other folks to take a look!
MPH Artistic Achievements of the Week*
Matthew Roberson | "Rebirth"
Students Recognized for Artistic Accomplishment
*Calling this "Photos of the Week" doesn't do it justice. This, instead, is a collection of award-winning art produced by MPH students and recognized at the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards in December of 2021. Students in MPH's Advanced Portfolio class focus on the Scholastics as a competition that can bring scholarships and recognition. The awards are Gold Key, Silver Key and Honorable Mention, as well as scholarships. For more information, visit the Scholastic Arts and Writing site.

Gold Key winners automatically have their work submitted to the national awards, which will be announced March 23, 2022. If a student is selected, the National Ceremony is in NYC in June.

Note: You will see a sample of the work below, but each winner (with the exception of three that are not available) can be viewed by linking to its name.

The Scene Around MPH
Senior Trumpeter Honored with All-State Invitation
Isabella DeRollo-Bird is making the most of her senior year at MPH. A spot on the varsity soccer team. Recognition for excellence in art (see above). And an invite to the 2022 NYSSMA Area-All-State Festival at Ithaca College on February 5.

This all follows on the heels on her appearance at the 2021 NYSSMA All-State Conference in the Windle Ensemble at the Eastman School of Music on Sunday, December 5. Isabella, who is also a member of the Syracuse Youth Orchestra and MPH Wind Ensemble and MPH Jazz Band, took the time to answer a few questions for Snapshot this week.

When did you start playing trumpet? And, most important, what’s driven your obvious interest and dedication all these years to be able to perform at this level?

I began playing trumpet in fifth grade and instantly loved it. Music has always been a part of my life since I was a child. My passion and love for music stems from my family.

Tell us a little about your time at Eastman with the wind ensemble … are these kinds of experiences helping shape your goals for the future?

I've been to practically every All-County and Area-All-State festival in the past, but nothing compares to All-State at Eastman.
It was the largest ensemble I'd ever performed with, and it included a renowned conductor from Ohio State.

Because I've been attending Ithaca College's intensive summer music academy for the past six years, I've met an incredible number of people who I see at every All-county, Area-All-State, and All-State festival. These experiences have allowed me to develop relationships with the professional musicians who conduct these events, and provided me with lifelong friends.

What are you looking forward to at the All-State Festival at Ithaca? Do you have any particular goals for that event?

Area-All-State will be my last festival before attending college, and I can’t wait to spend those few days making music.

Who has been especially inspiring to you as you’ve developed your musical interests and abilities?

Over the years, I've listened to trumpeters such as Dizzy Gillespie, Maynard Ferguson, Alison Balsom, and Wynton Marsalis.

My family, former music instructors, and private teachers have all supported me and played an important role in my development as a musician.

Empower CNY Offers Student-Led Volunteer Opportunities
Students Grades 8 through 12 have a wonderful community volunteer opportunity through Empower CNY, which was founded about a year ago by CNY teens (and continues to be run by teens) to provide tutoring to local K-8 students as a means of addressing educational inequities.

Empower currently conducts tutoring sessions for more than 50 students, some virtually and some in person. Locations include the OCPL Central and OCPL Petit Libraries, as well as the Vietnamese Community Center of Syracuse. They are also actively expanding to new locations. More details are available on Empower's website: empowercny.org.

Further details on tutoring times and locations from Empower CNY
Students in Grades 9-12 can register to be a tutor on our website and let us know where they would be able to tutor through the Google form. We will then reach out to them with more details.
If they are interested in virtual tutoring, sessions take place Saturday and Sunday evenings and mornings.

Currently, all of our in-person sessions take place each Saturday:

  • OCPL Central: Saturdays 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.
  • OCPL Petit: Saturdays 3 to 4:30 p.m.
  • Vietnamese Community Center: Saturdays 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

If you’re interested in contributing to the organization in more than just a tutoring capacity, consider applying for the Empower CNY LEAD Team. Admissions are rolling, and any student in Grades 9-12 may apply through this Google form.

If accepted, LEAD team members work alongside each other as well as the directors to facilitate outreach, brainstorm new ideas, and meet with each other bi-weekly to debrief.
Roots and Shoots Delays Can Drive to January 27
Due to the recent health protocols and risk of transmission, the Roots and Shoots Club is postponing the can and bottle drive to the first week of the third quarter: Thursday, January 27, and Friday, January 28. Students will collect cans from parents in the morning drop-off line. They are hoping to then exchange these cans and donate the money to the Sierra Club.
Athletics Apparel Store Open Again Until Jan. 23
If you missed it the first time around, the Trojans Apparel Store is open again for purchases until Jan. 23. There are men's, women's, and kids' options in a wide variety of sizes.

For those looking for MPH apparel that isn't athletics-themed, we will plan an order this spring. Stay tuned to Snapshot for details!
