Three Days of Celebration After a Year Away
After a 2020 COVID hiatus, Homecoming returned to Manlius Pebble Hill last week with an array of in-person and virtual red and white celebrations.
Festivities opened on Friday with "Red and White Day" at school, the culmination of a week of spirit days that also featured Dress Tropical Day, Wear Your Pajamas Day, and Favorite Sports Team Day.
Senior snack and a pep rally led off the morning, with students enjoying some food and games outside. The entire weekend was replete with gorgeous fall weather.

And food trucks even rolled in for the afternoon slate of sports. The Chicken Bandit truck and Gannon's Ice Cream fed the hungry attendees as Girls Varsity Tennis played Skaneateles, Girls Modified Soccer played OCS, and the Boys Varsity Soccer team took on Homer on the Lower Field (winning 4-0).
The weekend continued Saturday, as Recess Coffee and donuts from Dunkin' provided some early morning incentive, and Girls Varsity Soccer played Fabius-Pompey, winning 4-2.
In addition to athletics festivities and the fun of seeing old friends, a number of volunteers also helped mulch the playgrounds (see story below).

One of the highlights of Homecoming 2021 was the Red and White tent, which provided red and white popcorn, pom poms, senior and alumni vouchers for Gannon's Ice Cream, and temporary tattoos.

Mulch Ado about Something
|
Homecoming Weekend wasn't ALL fun and games – a crew of volunteers hoisted shovels and pushed wheelbarrows Saturday to spread some yards of mulch around, freshening (and softening) the landings on the school's two playgrounds.

In a 3-2 defeat of Tully on Wednesday, Boys Varsity Soccer Coach Don Ridall won his 600th game as a Trojan. Coach Ridall joined MPH in 1976, and over the course of his career has won not only a state championship and 600 games, but the admiration and respect of so many. True to form in the moments after the winning horn, Coach Ridall stared down his team intently to get them to listen and then regaled them with this bit of wisdom: "I'm concerned about the calendar," he said. And when the boys continued carrying on, the look got more stern and he repeated, louder, "I'M CONCERNED about the calendar ... because its days are numbered!"
Congrats, Coach.

New Staff Profile: Jay Brown | Core Health Teacher
|
I will be starting with MPH as a full-time employee this year as a Core Health teacher. I have been with the MPH family for more than 10 years as a counselor and now the director of the summer camps.
I am very excited to be with MPH for the entire school year! Outside of school, I am involved in ice hockey as an on-ice official. I currently work as a linesman for the AHL and a referee for Division I Men’s hockey. In addition to hockey, I also enjoy singing. I am currently the lead singer of a cover band and sing at some private events such as the Syracuse St Patrick’s Day Grand Marshal Gala, weddings, etc. When I am not at a hockey rink or playing music, I spend my time with my lovely wife, Allie, and our eight-month-old son Miles!

New Staff Profile
Zanae Milton | Receptionist
|
I reside in the city of Syracuse and graduated from Charles W. Baker High School in 2014. I am currently the Manlius Pebble Hill receptionist and have been overjoyed to be welcomed into the school and community. This has been truly fulfilling because I have a true passion to help others, and I’m always striving to set the example of kindness and joy. I graduated from Onondaga Community College with a concurrent degree in Humanities of Art & Business Management in 2017. I absolutely enjoy spending time with my friends and family – and especially becoming an aunt last fall! I’m excited for the school year and look forward to enjoying all we can with the staff and students.

The Life of Bees: An MPH Lesson
|
Resident beekeeper Amy Critz, executive assistant to the head of school, visited the Kindergarteners Thursday for her much-anticipated "Bee Lesson," during which the class learned about the life cycle of bees, the food they eat, and the fact that we end up with honey.
This year Amy had pictures of a swarm she had recently corralled with her husband and the aid of a Bobcat bucket loader.
