Pep Rally Returns to Kick Off Homecoming 2022

MPH Staff trying to remember when the School last had a pep rally could be excused for struggling with the timeline. "I guess it would have been 2019? Or '18? When did this happen, in the spring? So, the Fall of '20? No, 2019, I suppose. That's a long time."
Three years it turns out, give or take the 25 in the middle.
All that pent up energy was released joyously at Friday's pep rally in front of a crowd of students in Grades 3-12, with a few younger kids peeking through the gym windows looking forward to the day they get to scream and dance on the bleachers. One grandmother even wandered in during the festivities, a smiling remnant from the morning's "Grandparents' Day," which took place in the chilly STEAM Park and Bradlee Hallway classrooms. At that event, kids and their grandparents used bubble wands, helped each other with puzzles, and led each other around to look at art, meet the teachers, and snag cinnamon donuts and cider in The Phoenix.
The pep rally itself was stirring with energy before it even started, the bass tracks of student-selected music rumbling low in the gym. Teams were introduced, student sections tried to out-scream each other, and the always effervescent Jay Brown led the way as emcee, Then the games commenced: Musical chairs, "running into a wall at full speed to pop a balloon," and "eating an Oreo like a dog would" lit the way to dismissal and classes, except for the seniors who left for Senior Snack in the fancy farmhouse conference room.
It was a good start to a weekend of activities, with soccer tonight and tomorrow, food trucks, carnival games, and more. It was homecoming the way we imagine it, three years in the making.

Ms. Henderson's Intro to Design class took to the water this week as they tested out cardboard boat designs at the Fayetteville YMCA pool. Each team of four was required to get all four members across the pool and back with the option of having as many as four in the boat at a time or as few as one. Results varied (especially with four in the boat), but the class will return in a few weeks having worked out the kinks in their designs.

Building Community with Cups
|
Grade 9 students worked on a communication and problem-solving activity this week during which they were asked to build the tallest cup tower that they could without their hands, using only rubber bands and strings. Students had to negotiate how hard to pull on a certain side, what cup they were moving, and when everyone needed to pull together. The activity was part of a Core Health class led by Ms. Grantham.
