Celebrating the Class of 2022
Baccalaureate and Commencement Highlight Brilliant MPH Careers
After a 2021 that saw Baccalaureate held on Zoom and Commencement held with attendance restrictions, 2022 marked the return of fully in-person celebrations for the Class of 2022. Changes were made for Baccalaureate this year; the new ceremony was for seniors only and featured some memorable musical appearances from the MPH Bluegrass Fiddle Club, the MPH Jazz Trio, and senior trumpetist Isabella DeRollo, as well as the reading of each senior tribute and presentation of awards (with the exception of the Head of School Service Plate and Cup).

Commencement was held Sunday to honor the 47 members of the Class of 2022 to a crowd of more than 500 people on a gorgeous afternoon on the Upper Field (the cooperation of the weather was in doubt all morning but assured by the time of the ceremony). Senior speeches were given by Senior Elected Representative Ryan Kinane and Senior Class President Sergianni Jennings, while retiring coach and educator Don Ridall delivered the Commencement address. Music was provided by a combination of the Upper School Orchestra, members of the Senior Vocal Ensemble, and senior Anna Abrams, who sang the Alma Mater.

MPH Names New Head of School for 2023
At the conclusion of a successful search process, MPH is proud to announce that Jim Foley of St. Luke’s School in New Canaan, Connecticut, will be the next Head of School at Manlius Pebble Hill School, effective July 1, 2023. Please read this announcement from Board President John Mezzalingua for more details.
Tribute to a Legend
Don Ridall Steps Away from Coaching after 46 Years
It's a lonely picture, the one above. A man awash in his past, voices rising from the ether in service of memories, the light through the gym windows illuminating only him. But pictures can be deceiving. MPH paid tribute to Don Ridall last week – he won't call it "retirement," but he is stepping down from his daily duties – and he was as far from alone as a man can be in that moment.

It was a surprise orchestrated by Core Health educator Jay Brown, Core Health staff members Nichole Demers and Emma Firenze, and various other members of the faculty and staff, with a huge contribution from the MPH facilities crew in the form of a beautiful table made out of the center circle of the old gym floor, presented as a gift to Don, who had told Jay innumerable times, "I just want a piece of that old floor."

He was greeted by cheering students and returned to them after for pictures – clearly at home amidst their buzzing and movement. Jay had organized the video tribute that set the stage for the dramatic images. Don's wife and grandchildren made their appearances among the scrolling pictures of championships past, pictures of Don with students whose own children he has taught, pictures of Don in countless moments of happiness wandering the grounds of the School or posing in his office, pictures of the old moustache and the unforgettable smile. His old players congratulated him; old students, colleagues. Some sent messages from as far away as China.

The School has paid tribute to Don in so many ways this year, and it somehow doesn't feel like enough. He's promised he'll be here still, on his own schedule, insisting no one says, "the R word." One can imagine the MPH community will hold him to it. But for now, it was goodbye.
Bidding Farewell for Now to the Lower School, too
From the Kindergarten dance at the class "moving up" ceremony to snow cones at the CEL sendoff, Lower School students celebrated the end of the school year with their own flair this past week. Kindergarten students led off their ceremony with a dance for families in attendance, and "crossed over" after the dance as proud parents and supporters watched from the STEAM park. The CEL was also the scene of end-of-year smiles, as Althea the therapy dog made an appearance along with Nurse Christine and her MPH snow cone maker. Families took some time to catch up and mingle while the kids did what they're best at: run around the playground and keep the adults busy.
