Congratulations, Nurse Christine!

The New York State Association of School Nurses is pleased to recognize school nurses who go above and beyond their daily activities in making their schools a safe and welcoming environment.

The following is an excerpt from nysasn.org: Christine Civello RN, BSN, deserves her Everyday Hero Recognition for being an “invaluable” school nurse employed at Manlius Pebble Hill School in Syracuse. She is described by her school co-worker, Amy Critz, as having vast medical knowledge and expertise, along with always being available and kind to everyone she encounters. She also serves as a member of her school’s pandemic response team and as the Zone 10 president. In addition to her usual school nurse responsibilities, Christine regularly organizes a flu immunization clinic for staff and the school’s blood drive. In endorsing her contributions to the school, Christine is described as “a true, above and beyond employee.”
Welcome Shawn Tompkins!

We are thrilled to welcome Deputy Chief Shawn C. Tompkins (Ret.) to the MPH family! A recent retiree of the DeWitt Fire Department, Shawn is excited to begin a new professional chapter with all of us as both a coverage teacher and as our health & safety coordinator. This timing is fortuitous for many reasons, as he brings many diverse and applicable skill sets and experiences to the Pandemic Reponse Team and the greater MPH community.

Shawn spent more than 25 years as a firefighter/paramedic in Upstate New York. A devoted educator, Shawn spent the majority of his career teaching everything from Fire/Rescue/EMS classes to disaster management and scene safety. Along with his diverse emergency preparedness background, he is both a “defensive tactics” and “verbal Judo – communications and de-escalation” instructor and has spent hundreds of hours training others to manage aggressive and violent behaviors. Deputy Chief Tompkins’ writing regarding personal safety and proper patient restraint techniques has been published in fire/EMS magazines, and he has developed some of the only curriculum addressing such. Shawn is an avid cyclist and a peer fitness trainer and youth fitness specialist with the American Council on Exercise. Shawn is a graduate of SUNY Upstate Medical University and SUNY Empire State College with concentrations in health and emergency management. Shawn has been married for 18 years and has two children.

MPH Victorious at Rutgers University’s ConnectMUN

The MPHMUN Team spent last weekend participating in the Rutgers University’s ConnectMUN virtual conference. Their hard work and dedication paid off, as they were awarded "Best Delegation" for a medium-size school!  ConnectMUN is The Institute for Domestic & International Affairs' newest Model United Nations conference, designed to provide students the opportunity to continue their MUN experience even as the global pandemic limits large, in-person events.

Update on MPH Ski Club

While schools cannot provide traditional ski clubs this year, we are grateful that both Song and Labrador Mountains are still offering the opportunity for families to take advantage of a generous group discount. Rather than having a day-specific program, this year families from all three divisions are welcome to pick which mountain and day that they would like to bring their children, with options including single-day passes for Tuesday through Sunday, or a full season pass. Please note that MPH will not able to provide transportation or supervision. Forms and instructions can be found here. Please contact Mr. Vural if you have any questions.

Thank You!

In response to this year’s Two for Tuesdays Challenge Initiative we received overwhelming support from our community and could not be more grateful!

In total we raised a record-breaking $91,027 from 189 gifts
during the four weeks.

We especially want to thank those groups and individuals who offered challenge matches this year: The Manlius Pebble Hill School Board of Trustees, Cristina Danial '01 and Megan Nesloney, Ben Kram '95 and Sharon Kubo, Dave and Steff McCusker, and Kent Sutherland ’05.
Want to inspire others through your philanthropy? Consider supporting MPH by offering to sponsor a giving day or Two-for-Tuesdays challenge next year! If you’re interested please contact Director of Philanthropy and Engagement Kelly Rose at krose@mphschool.org.
