It was a week of spooky, risk-taking, educational fun!
A Successful MPHMUN Conference!
Students on the MPHMUN team hosted the 20th annual MPH Model United Nations Conference on Saturday, October 26. Under the direction of MPHMUN Coordinator Sarah Chhablani, the conference was organized by secretariat members Nathan Sonnenfeld, Daniel Braverman, Peri Cannavo, and Andrew Benincasa. Over 230 students from 12 local schools participated in the conference, with Fayetteville-Manlius winning Best Delegation (as conference organizers, MPH was ineligible to receive major awards). This year's conference theme was "sustaining our world," and half of the committees were paperless. Conservation International was this year's chosen charity, and over $1,000 was raised through fundraising at the conference to benefit that organization. Learn more about the conference, the charity, and the keynote speaker, David O’Connor here.

Not-so-Scary Halloween Fun at MPH!
The rain didn't put a damper on our annual Halloween festivities at MPH! Lower schoolers paraded through the halls dressed for the occasion, wearing princess gowns, chicken suits, baseball uniforms, and even an instant mac-and-cheese costume! After making their way through each hallway, the students, and many parents and faculty members, gathered in the gym for Halloween songs and a final parade to get one last look at their classmates' costumes!

Under the Microscope: Sixth Graders

Sixth-grade scientists built on a previous class, in which they had learned to make slides and use a microscope, by observing the aquatic plant, Elodea, their own mouth cells, and onion cells. In order to highlight the structural differences between plant and animal cells, students used methylene blue to stain their mouth cells and iodine to stain the onion cells. See the photos below. Want to hear more? Listen to Jesse explain it himself by clicking the video on the right!
Upper School World Language: French 3 and AP Spanish

Last week, Mme. Cadin asked her French 3 students to research an artist of their choice and present to their classmates in French, of course! Just down the hall, Sra. Medina-Dooher invited us into her AP Spanish classroom to witness a “round table” discussion about the global impact of climate change. The icing on the cake? This weighty discussion was conducted entirely in Spanish! Check out the videos below!

7th-Grade Trip
The 7 th grade class embarked on a two-day trip last week, which included a visit to the Corning Museum of Glass and an overnight on the Hoffman Challenge Course at Cornell University. The day at Corning included glass blowing demonstrations, fascinating optical illusions, and exhibits with artifacts dating back to Ancient Egypt. At the challenge course, students worked with Cornell facilitators on several team building exercises, and then challenged themselves on several high ropes elements, even hoisting their Social Entrepreneurship teacher thirty feet in the air! Kudos go to our faculty chaperones Sue Foster, Lilly Thomann, and Matt Vural, and to the kids for their good nature and enthusiastic participation.
The Algae Academy
Having been selected to pilot a curriculum called “The Algae Academy” (from The Algae Foundation), Ms. Yeager has her 9 th-grade biology students diving right in. Click on the photo to see a gallery of images capturing these young scientists as they learn to identify algae cultures under the microscope.
Dave McCusker Gets a Visit from Pre-K!

The excitement among the Pre-K students was palpable as they climbed the stairs with their teachers and headed toward Mr. McCusker’s office late last week. They had something important to deliver to him, after all -- a special gift, which they had made as a class!

The Sound of Music: US Wind Ensemble
In addition to other passersby, Lower Schoolers whose recess, lunch, or gym period had just ended were treated to some live music in the Phoenix on Tuesday. Some even found themselves itching to move to the funky, upbeat rhythms of the song, which was brought to them by members of the Upper School wind ensemble. (Thank you, musicians, and thanks, Mr. Huyge!)
