“...scuzzy garage rock with demented swagger. Explosive and embracing 1970s rock visually and sonically, the band is a must-check for those who like their rock n’ roll dangerous.”

“‘Bonanza,’ a chaotically scattergunning anthology of hair-on-fire, garage-rattling psych rock, charging relentlessly up a hill that has no peak and built to absorb the tumble back down. Sisyphus himself lacked the power to proclaim ‘screw this’ when he tired of the grind — the Macks have that card to play, and it’s stitched into this record.”

Today, fresh off a whirlwind release of their irreverent new album Bonanza, Portland, Oregon’s The Macks share the official music video for “Cypher Sore Eyes.” This standout cut from the recent record is a droning, dissonant and disillusioned track where they question how we are supposed to move about life when every action seems to support a cause we don’t stand behind.

In the video, directed by Jake Thiessan and shot on 16mm and Super 8, we see The Macks in raw form; trudging through their hometown haunts, gear in hand. “The goal was to show our appreciation for Portland and showcasing the areas that we see every day, not your standard tourist locations,” shared vocalist Sam Fulwiler. “It’s also a vibe piece that shows us wearing what we actually wear on stage, which was a nice contrast to the first video [“Dually of Man” / “The Modern Grape”] which has us dressed in a way that we never do with hi-fi production.”

LISTEN TO BONANZA

In a hard-driving suite of 11 tracks, the new record covers everything from the disillusionment of existing in the current state of affairs to the doldrums of the suburban lifestyle. Topics that they had to move away from to eventually get close to, Bonanza is The Macks in raw, unfiltered form.

Guitarist Ben Windheim shared, "We had a very strong vision for ‘Bonanza.’ With ‘The Macks Are A Knife,’ we explored a maximalist approach, writing tons of songs and creating dense arrangements. With ‘Bonanza,’ we knew the tracklist before we recorded a single note, and we pre-produced the whole thing. It's not a concept album, but loosely it's an ‘I am’ statement, showing as completely what The Macks can do as possible. It's soft, heavy, catchy, heady, fun, devastating, cocky, vulnerable... It's all about contrast and our lives which comes with the entire range of emotions"

Putting it simply, Fulwiler said, “Bonanza is a slice of life. It’s about boys, girls, and dying.”

ABOUT THE MACKS:

Bonanza (bo-nan-za); noun; “a situation or event that creates a sudden increase in wealth or good fortune.”

The Macks may have stumbled upon their Bonanza, but there is no pot of gold at the end of this rainbow. It’s all about the grind, baby! Steam locomotives accelerate faster than this band, every action met with an equal and opposite reaction. For 10 years, The Macks have been collecting disciples one at a time, and now are delivering a record made for them. Focused, scattered, electric and tender, Bonanza is a collection of miscellaneous rock that could only have been crafted by this dedicated and bull-headedly sincere troupe of desperate artists. First time listeners will be met with honest writing, bold production, and a world that invites them to join in on the good fortune - just don’t expect any money.

Founded in 2015 in Portland, Oregon, The Macks are brothers Josef (drums) and Ben Windheim (guitar), Sam Fulwiler (vocals), Jacob Michael Perris (keys) and Aidan Harrison (bass). Bonanza is out now via Devil Duck Records / Monotone's record label fullaway.
