Public Works

• Street painting is underway, weather permitting. Crosswalks and turning lane arrows are being done first. Parking stalls will follow.
• I have been in contact with a contracted street line painting company. He is expected to have our lines done before the Fourth of July parade. Again, this is weather dependent.
• We have completed the remount of our 2009 one ton with a newer dump body from an older out of service truck. This should get us a few more years of service from the body and chassis.
• We have completed bracing the picnic table shelters at Jerry Pond. We had to remove a few of them that were too rotten to safely leave standing. The remaining structures should be better suited to handle the snow loads in winter that caused some to collapse.
• The dock at Jerry Pond has been repaired from damage sustained over the winter and put back into service. We also replaced some rotten decking.
• We have started to repair and repaint the concrete fascia surrounding the Town Office front entrance. 

Transfer Station

• This is a reminder that the Millinocket Transfer Site is for waste generated within the town, and those approved unorganized Territories only. Surrounding communities have their own Transfer sites for residents in those towns.
• The brush and compost area is left open during times the transfer site is closed as a convenience to the public. Please do not abuse it.
• Everyone should have their transfer site usage stickers by now, if not, they need to be purchased ASAP.
• Recycling is being accepted and we are looking for all the cardboard, plastic jugs and tin cans that we can get. 
• New signage is being ordered to remind everyone of the recycling center being open..

Cemetery

• Spring burials are happening at a rapid pace right now keeping the crew busy.
• We are now fully staffed and are working to keep the grass mowed and trimmed as the weather permits.
• The cemetery has rules on what decorations are allowed around headstones. They can be viewed on the Town’s website.  They are in place for the safety and convenience of the maintenance crew as well as the public.

Waste Water

• We would like to remind the residents of Millinocket to please NOT flush wipes, paper towels, grease, plastics, Q-tips or anything other than toilet paper into the sewer system. Even the "flushable" wipes will clog the sewer system. These items are causing extreme plugs to the sewer system and costly maintenance to our pumping stations. We would like to thank the residents for this consideration.

Millinocket School Department

•  The end of the school year brings the start of our Summer Food Service Program. In collaboration with schools and organizations throughout our region, we are able to provide meals at no charge to the children and young adults (up to age 18) of our communities at 7 sites between Millinocket, East Millinocket, and Medway. 
• Katie DiFrederico, Social Worker at Granite Street School, reports that she completed and submitted the required documentation for the McKinney-Vento review to the Maine Department of Education on May 24. The DOE will review the materials and give final approval at the end of June.
• The Class of 2023 did a “Senior Walk” in their caps and gowns through the halls of Granite Street School on Thursday, June 1. The halls were lined with Granite Street students and staff who clapped and cheered as they made their way around the building.
• Stearns Assistant Principal/Athletic Director Nick Cullen shares that he is very pleased with the progress that we have made in the scheduling process for next year. We have been able to add a Stearns Time period to our schedule that we will used to provide students with additional supports in areas of struggle as well as enrichment for students who are excelling. We will also be adding and adviser advisee program where each student will have a teacher who monitors their grades and provides support for each student.
• We have made some great growth in the athletic department. We have been able to use some grant money to put some much needed love into our fields. We have been fortunate to have some great community members, as well as our athletic boosters, make considerable donations towards new scoreboards and signs for the fields. We are at the point where all of our fields have new or refinished scoreboards that will add to the wonderful athletic facilities that we have here on our campus.
• The first day of school for the 2023-2024 school year is Wednesday, August 30, 2023. Enjoy your summer everyone!

East Millinocket Police Department

• We have responded to 4500 calls for service in 2023, with over 2000 of those calls being in the Town of Millinocket.
• We have arrested / summonsed over 240 individuals in 2023.
• We have hired David Peters as a new full-time police officer. David comes to our agency with more than a decade of experience in law enforcement and corrections. He previously worked for the East Millinocket Police Department as a part-time police officer and most recently worked for the University of Maine Police Department. He also spent several years working for the Department of Corrections. Ofc Peters is slated to attend the MCJA BLETP in January of 2024.
• Ofc Clayton has been picked as the departments first ever K-9 Officer. Ofc Clatyon and Chief McDunnah travelled to New Hampshire to meet a potential canine. This is the beginning steps of the start of the K-9 program at EMPD. The K-9 program has been completely funded by a grant and this is going to be a huge asset to the region. Once a dog is selected, Ofc Clayton is slated to attend the patrol portion of the K-9 training in New Hampshire this fall. The patrol portion deals with tracking of individuals. After becoming successfully certified as a patrol K-9, Ofc Clayton and the K-9 will attend drug detection school in Spring 2024.
• As summer is upon us and 4th of July celebrations begin we want to remind citizens of the Town of Millinocket ordinance on fireworks. The Town of Millinocket has an ordinance which states no person shall use, sell or offer for sale consumer fireworks. Additionally, any person who uses consumer fireworks in the Town of Millinocket shall be punished by a fine of not less than $500.
• Lastly, we look forward to the upcoming 4th of July activities happening in the region and we want to remind everyone to be responsible and have a safe and fun 4th of July and pray for good weather!
