Call the Public Works Department first at 207.723.7030 to determine if the issue is with the Town's infrastructure. This can save you time and money on unnecessary plumbing calls.

Code Enforcement

The Code Enforcement and Public Health and Safety Department has been hard at work addressing community needs and ensuring our town remains a safe and healthy place to live. Here’s a snapshot of what we've been up to:

Community & Development Initiatives:

• I've been collaborating with FEMA on flood map updates and attended a Zoom meeting to stay current on these important changes.
• We're actively following up on complaints regarding property conditions around town and conducting continued follow-up inspections for issued permits.
• Working with a citizen on a home occupancy project, we've set up a Site Plan Review with the Planning Board.
• Regarding the recent fire at 82 Prospect St., we’re in discussions with the owner about their plans for the property and have outlined time constraints for action (90 days for a plan, 6 months for building removal).
• We continue to receive and issue permits for roof-mounted solar panel projects throughout the community.
• We're also following up on projects that are proceeding without the necessary permits.
• Great news for new businesses! We met with a Dental Hygienist who is looking to open a shop in Millinocket and are guiding her through the necessary steps.
• We're working with the owners and contractors at 240 Penobscot Ave. on their building renovations, and it was great to attend the ribbon cutting!
• We've also met with the Pir2Peer director and financial personnel regarding their intent to acquire a building on Tamarack St. to develop an Addiction Resource Facility, advising them on the Site Plan Review process required by the Planning Board.
• We're working with an individual interested in purchasing property on Bates St., exploring potential uses and compliance requirements.
• Discussions are underway with Peter, Lorna, and The Musson Group concerning potential development plans for undeveloped land in Millinocket owned by Acadian, with thoughts on creating new house lots.
• Another developer is working on a project with a local company, and we've discussed zoning and the Site Plan Review process for their plans in a restricted area.

Public Safety & Health:

• I've been taking a series of webinars focusing on "Charge Into Fire Safety," teaching important safety practices for handling, charging, and storing lithium-ion batteries.
• Our office has been very busy, assisting many residents with questions and providing information about project permitting requirements.
• We conducted Life Safety Code (LSC) inspections, helping clients with compliance.
• We recently participated in a class on subsurface wastewater applications and new updates concerning AUDs (Alternative Urban Designs), and their unique standing regarding town ordinances.
• We successfully delivered sand buckets to citizens as part of a community project.
• Annual maintenance checks for the town elevator were completed with Pine State Elevator, and we're coordinating annual inspections and alarm testing with Maine Fire Protection.
• Working with Versant on right-of-way issues to replace aging poles and encourage tree trimming around town lines.

Administrative & Collaboration:

• Attended Council meetings and worked on the budget worksheet for the Town Manager and Treasurer.
• Collaborated with groups on the Winterfest Snowmobile Parade.
• I've attended the after-action meeting on Zoom for the Millinocket Marathon.
• We had an on-site visit from the MMA Workman Comp fund for safety incentives, conducting random inspections of Town facilities. We're also working on a new application for this program and updating various policies to present to MMA soon.
• We've started receiving items purchased through the MMA Safety Grant and are now working on a new grant for this year.
• It's been great working with Amber to secure grant funding to add more "Skate Buddies" to the rink – the four we have are a huge hit and really help children learning to skate!
• I’m also working with Peter, Matt, and Asher on the committee set up by the Town Council to review and make changes to the Code Book, ensuring all ordinances are included.
• We've been contacted by the electrician and plumber for the new building at 181 Penobscot Ave., and are awaiting their plans. Discussions with Mr. Benjamin regarding the unused space indicate it will remain unfinished for future tenant needs.

East Millinocket Police Department

Here’s a brief update from the East Millinocket Police Department.

Calls for Service:

To date, we’ve responded to 1,103 total calls for service, with 493 of those calls right here in Millinocket.

Officer Recognition:

We are incredibly proud to announce that Sergeant Clayton has been selected as the State of Maine winner of the prestigious Enrique "Kiki" Camarena Award! This award recognizes law enforcement officers who demonstrate exceptional dedication, integrity, and commitment to community service, named in honor of DEA Special Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena. Sgt. Clayton’s outstanding leadership, professionalism, and positive impact on our department and community truly earned him this honor. He joins Corporal Bradley Fitzgerald and Officer Gary Lakeman as the third recipient from our agency, which is a testament to the dedication of our team!

Staffing Update:

We are excited to share some great news regarding our staffing. After dealing with some shortages, we are thrilled that as of March, we will be fully staffed and ready to continue serving our communities!

Fire/EMS Department

The Millinocket Fire and EMS Department has been active this month, both in training and serving our community.

Department Recognition:

• Our annual Awards Night was held on Tuesday, February 3rd, where we recognized outstanding contributions:
• John Brenenstuhl: 2025 Firefighter of the Year
• Matt Farrington: 2025 Fire Chief's Award
• Isaac Hakes: 2025 Most Improved Firefighter
• Letters of Commendation were presented to Matt Farrington, Katie Cullen, John Brenenstuhl, Noah Bachner, and Chad Labby for their exemplary service.
• All department members received Certificates of Appreciation for their dedication and support in 2025.
• On Tuesday, February 24th, department members presented the family of Warren Nelson with a flag that flew in his memory at the Millinocket Fire Station. We have officially retired his call number "7850."

Training & Leadership:

• Chief Cote successfully completed the Fire Officer IV Class in Augusta from February 17th to 19th, achieving his Fire Officer IV Pro Board Certification.
• He also attended training on Propane Response and the LifeFlight of Maine IC Onboarding.
• We're excited to announce Chief Cote is working with EMCC to host a two-day EMS Leadership Seminar for the Katahdin Area in April, and with area departments and the Maine Fire Service Institute to set up an Emergency Vehicle Drivers Training Course for April-May.
• Department members completed their annual SCBA refresher and gear drills, as well as snowmobile and water rescue training.
• Our team also completed a Street-Smart Incident Commander Class with Chief Johnson of Maineiac Fire Training.
• Basic Fire School Class has begun, instructed by Chief Cote, with four students representing both East Millinocket and Millinocket.

Operations & Equipment:

• Chief Cote has been working on the 2027 Budget worksheets, which have now been submitted.
• He's also collaborating with Dr. Turnquist on new federal requirements for Drug Boxes and with PRCC on the County Radio project to update all Millinocket Fire Department radios to new frequencies.
• Our Forestry Grant funds have been spent, and we're awaiting the arrival of items to be placed in service.
• The remainder of the Low Angle Rescue Grant funds have also been spent, with new equipment on its way to be put into service.
• Engine 783 had its automatic air eject system replaced due to corrosion.
• New portable radio chargers have been purchased for our three ambulances and will be installed soon.
• Our fulltime crews have been busy with the Fire Extinguisher program and continue to offer Home Safety Surveys and CO/Smoke Alarm installations upon request. They’ve also been actively training on shift across various topics related to Fire, EMS, Rescue, and Hazmat.

Community Engagement:

• Chief Cote and the On Duty Crew participated in the Snowmobile Parade on Friday, February 13th.
• The department continues to distribute File of Life Cards and Naloxone to residents.
• We also continue to install CO/Smoke Alarms and conduct home safety surveys for Millinocket residents.

Staffing Update:

• One full-time staff member is currently on medical leave.
• We currently have one full-time opening remaining.
