Millinocket Community Rallies Together for Earth Day Clean-Up

The Millinocket Earth Day Clean-Up event was a resounding success, thanks to the tireless efforts of community members of all ages who came together to care for and beautify our local parks and green spaces. Despite the initial forecast of rain on April 22nd, which prompted organizers to reschedule the event to April 23rd, a dedicated workforce showed up ready to make a difference.

The event, initiated by Millinocket's Age-Friendly Committee, drew support from numerous organizations and individuals, demonstrating the power of community collaboration. Together, participants worked diligently to clean up our community spaces, fostering a sense of pride and connection among residents.

Special recognition goes to Municipal WasteHub for donating work gloves to ensure volunteers' safety during the clean-up efforts. Additionally, the Freedom Riders Association, Maine 3, played a crucial role in celebrating the event's success with a delicious BBQ, firing up the grill to serve up tasty burgers and hot dogs.

The outpouring of support for this event showcases the community's commitment to keeping Millinocket clean, connected, and proud. A huge thank you to everyone who participated, and we look forward to future community initiatives that bring us together for the betterment of our town.

Public Works Department

As we welcome the arrival of spring, the Public Works Department is hard at work maintaining our town's infrastructure and services. Here's a rundown of some of the key activities and updates from our team:

Road Maintenance

• We've spread 20 tons of cold patch to repair potholes so far this season.
• Our crew has plowed and sanded two small snow storms, and we're now focusing on spring maintenance.
• Street sweeping has begun, starting with the downtown area and main routes, before moving into residential areas.

Equipment Maintenance

• We've installed a new floor in the elevator of the street sweeper, along with new brooms, to ensure our equipment is in top working condition.
• We've also repaired a broken traffic light support at the intersection of Penobscot and Central.

Transfer Station

• The waste hauling truck was down for two weeks due to an electrical issue, but we appreciate the assistance from East Millinocket Public Works in hauling our waste to the landfill during that time.
• We've shipped out a truckload of TVs and electronic waste for recycling and resecured the plywood around compactor #1.
• To prevent out-of-town shingles from being disposed of at our facility, Shingle Disposal will now require homeowner and address information along with the disposal fee.
• As a reminder, any refrigerator or freezer brought to the transfer station for disposal needs to be empty, with all grates, trays, or compartments removed.
• Our brush grinding contractor has requested that nothing longer than 8 feet be brought to the brush pile to avoid plugging the grinder.

Recycling Reminders

• Every ton of recycled material saves the Town on tipping fees and generates revenue. We're encouraging residents to recycle as much as possible, including cardboard, plastic jugs, and tin cans.

Cemetery Updates

• Spring burials are being scheduled for the upcoming season. Please contact us to arrange for services.
• The Cemetery is closed for the season, with only foot traffic allowed at this time.

Community Request

• Please avoid parking on tree belts, as they are still soft and may require repairs if rutted.

School Department

We're thrilled to share some exciting updates and achievements from our schools!

6th Grade Science Fair Winners

Our 6th-grade students showcased their scientific talents at the recent Science Fair. Congratulations to the winners:

• Honorable Mention: Jansen Lapingcoa for "Wind Turbines and how much energy they create"
• 3rd Place: Alison Reece for "Floating Eggs based on salt content and water density"
• 2nd Place: Connor LeGassey for "Gummy Bears, how different substances changed their shape or dissolved them"
• 1st Place: Jacoby Michaud for "Debunking the 5 Second Rule, bacteria growth on foods that touched the floor for 1-5 seconds"

Student Achievements

• Mrs. Kristi Hayes' high school biology students created impressive 3D cell models, including some made out of cake!
• Ms. Angela Jackson's MS Science class students submitted posters for the Maine Water Posters Contest, with five Stearns 7-8 grade students becoming finalists.

Bikes for Books Program

Granite Street's annual Bikes for Books program has started, encouraging students to read at home and enter a drawing for a bike. Thank you to the Masons for donating bikes for each grade level PK-5!

Guest Speaker

Fourth-grade students learned about electricity and powerline safety from a guest speaker from Versant Power.

Food Service Update

Our food service teams served 5,212 breakfasts and 6,265 lunches in March. Planning is underway for the upcoming SUN Meals program (formerly SFSP), which will provide meals for students during the summer.
